Coruscant, Monday Fandom time

Jaina awoke in pitch black, kind of aching all over. That enough warranted some worry, but she would give herself a mental pat on the back later when she didn't freak out at hearing something whir past her. By the pain she was in and the smell of bacta in the air, she deduced that it was probably medical droids.

But if she was in a medical facility...

"I can't see," she realized, definitely trying to keep the panic out of her voice this time. It didn't entirely work. She kept trying to open her eyes, despite the fact that they were already open, just in case she'd done it wrong the first time.

"The bacta should take care of that," a droid responded.

"What do you mean should?" Jaina demanded. Her chest hurt, and therefore talking hurt, so she didn't ask the many questions she wanted to ask, such as "Where am I?" "What happened?" and "No, really, why can't I see?" She couldn't sense droids in the Force, so as far as she could feel, she was all alone right here, and it was not the best feeling ever. She'd calmed down, but she'd never been good with being scared.

And there wasn't anything she could do, either, except for cooperate and hope the bacta did its job.

The medical droid shone a light in Jaina's eyes, asked a question, and got a frustrated reply of, "Nope. Can't see that, either."

They were still doing tests. She had taken to answering with put-upon sighs most of the time, having gone right past scared into angry and frustrated. In her defense, though, it was extremely irritating, and while most of the pain was gone now, she still couldn't see. She insisted that her vision was already improving, but it wasn't nearly a big enough change to make her feel better. And it was her own fault, which meant that she had to take it out on everyone else.

It wasn't even a Vong that got her. Well, it was, but she'd kept going after she was hit, which was why she was too close to the Champion when it blew. She'd managed to catch a nice burst of radiation, fry her X-wing entirely, lose her droid, and end up floating in space to be brought back in by one of her squadronmates. At least she'd gotten in some really good battle time before taking herself out of the game, possibly for good.

She'd heard talk about this sort of injury, stories about eye replacements and permanent damage, and while the droids were programmed to be reassuring, Jaina wasn't buying it. Then there was the added worry that she wasn't going to be able to go back to the Rogues, or fly at all. It didn't even come from the fact that she wanted to fly as much as it did from the fact that she herself was hitting the Vong good. They really did need her, and it wasn't just vanity or arrogance speaking.

"Do you have any idea yet how long I'll be like this?" Jaina asked in annoyance. "It's been three days, you should be able to tell."

"We believe you should recover," the droid told her. "In time."

"Yeah, great, how much time?"

"It is hard to say. Everyone is different. You should not require surgery."

Small relief. Honestly, she didn't mind needing surgery as long as it worked. Fix her up entirely with biomechanical parts if that was what it took, but she wanted to be back out there. "Can I leave?" she asked. "What do I have to do? Just get me back to my squadron."

"That would not be my recommendation."

The only reason Jaina wasn't banging her head against the wall yet was because she'd feel foolish trying to find the wall just to do it. "You don't understand. I still have work to do."

The droid ignored her. "You will need to wear this for the time being," it said, placing something in her hand.

She could tell it was a mask, which would cover the top half of her face, with lenses to shield her eyes. "Is this necessary?"

"Yes."

Jaina sighed for the nth time, more or less guessing at how to put it on, sliding the soft headband over her head and adjusting it to be more comfortable. She must have done it right, because the droid didn't correct her. "I look like an idiot, don't I."

"It is necessary for your recovery."

"That's a yes," she said. At least for as long as she was here, no one would be seeing her except for the droids, probably. Colonel Darklighter had told her that Han and Jacen had been reached and told about her condition, but so far all attempts to locate Leia had failed. The fact that Leia was incommunicado when Jaina was pretty seriously injured stung enough, but the fact that she hadn't been able to tell that she was hurt was somehow worse.

That thought, the same one that had left her more than a little bitter while she waited for a conclusive prognosis, was again determined to stick in her brain to work over why and how of course Leia didn't know, that was nothing new, why should she be surprised now? She wasn't going to get distraction here, either. Not for the first- or last- time, she considered badgering the droid into getting her the comlink, but she honestly didn't see what good it would do. She didn't want to worry anyone when hopefully she'd be better by the time she went back. Hopefully.

Jaina was almost sorry when the medical droid left, because that meant she was left alone again in the dark with her own thoughts, and she would have much rathered be annoyed.

[And oh yeah. NFB for distance, NFI, yadda yadda *disclaimers*.]
