Borleias, Thursday Fandom time
It was good to be back. There were so many other thoughts and emotions going through Jaina upon her return to Borleias, but her primary feeling was just that. It was good to be back.
She didn't have a lot of free time, and she sort of felt badly, like she brought John all this way to neglect him, but she kind of figured he understood, and Han and Leia had promised to keep him busy. Hopefully they weren't just trying to get news about her. Not that Jaina had time to care; she had to check off on the roster and see to so many administrative duties that she thought Wedge was piling it all on her on purpose, and when she wasn't doing that, she was spending some time with the Jedi kids on base, but primarily she was conducting her own brand of tactics testing in the X-wings with Kyp and Jag. And yes, she chose to be mildly irritated that Jag, who had absolutely no access to the Force, was able to not only anticipate her own actions, but was watching her and Kyp closely enough to suggest improvements. Maybe more than mildly.
Their exercises were cut short, however, when both Kyp and Jaina felt the disturbance, something Jag only noticed when Kyp trailed off midsentence. "What is it?"
"Something..." Jaina said, only half realizing she'd even spoken. For some reason her attention was on a star, and a second later she was bringing up the nav program and switching frequencies on her comm to get all professional. "Twin Suns Leader to Control."
"Control here."
"Do you have anything going on in the spinward side of the system, say on an approximate course towards Arkania?"
There was a pause as the man on the other side of the comlink checked the data. "Negative on that."
"Something's up... my flight is going to head that way. Keep your ears open for us," Jaina said, then switched back to the frequency that would allow her to talk to the guys. "Come on, mortals."
Kyp was well-trained, or at least still sort of amused by the whole thing. "As you wish, Goddess."
Jag just clicked his comlink. Any other time she'd be irritated that he wasn't playing.
Whatever Jaina had been expecting when they got there, it hadn't been a worldship. And though she didn't like any of the feelings that brought bubbling up to the surface, it wasn't anything she could deal with now. Instead, she and Jag and Kyp got to use some of their new techniques in dealing with the Yuuzhan Vong frigate and coralskippers sent to slow them down. The frigate wouldn't get close to Borleias, but when the Vong began releasing an estimation of twenty-two hostages towards the planet's surface to burn alive upon reentry, Jaina and her team realized attacking Borleias hadn't been their intention.
Jaina wanted to freak out. There wasn't been an obvious way to save them, and she wanted to save them. She could see their faces from her cockpit, but she didn't know what to do for them. Her natural reaction to the helpless feeling was to go after the retreating frigate and blow them to pieces.
"Don't do it," Kyp said, sending that through the Force as well as the comm channel. "They're trying to dictate your responses."
She knew he was right. She knew it. And she had to be the one in control here. "Serenity," she whispered, in no small part trying to convince herself of it. "The way of the Jedi is serenity."
The only thing she could think to do was try to use the Force to yank the hostages back away from the planet, which she and Kyp both had problems with due to things like physics. They could slow them down with enough work, but it wasn't enough to stop their travels toward the planet. "Jag, you can't do anything here," Jaina commed to him. "Get back to Borleias, escort some shuttles up-"
"I've called for shuttles," Jag returned. "And I'll let you know when I'm useless. I recommend you follow mylead and discontinue slowing them to a stop."
His plan involved some pretty impressive flying to maneuver his clawcraft into the way of the hostages vectored towards the planet, and simply bump them away. It was anything but graceful and probably did a fair amount of physical damage itself, but it was better than what could have happened. Seeing the technique work, Kyp and Jaina followed his lead, the latter trying not to get too nerve-wracked.
In the end, they lost four of the twenty-two hostages to exposure, though not a single one reached Borleias' atmosphere.
It had been good to be back.
