Jedi Temple- Coruscant- Friday morning

Things had gotten tense at the Temple. Sothais Saar had been the most recent victim of this Jedi madness, it was all over the news, Coruscant Security officers had set up camp on the front steps, and everyone knew this was going to end badly, even if they couldn't guess how badly yet. When Jaina got wind of the news, she headed straight down to the medical ward, since she'd sort of involved herself in the care and treatment of the mad Jedi since she first came up with Darkmeld.

Cilghal was leaning over Saar, who was unconscious and hooked up to machines, along with being shackled to the bed, just in case. Her aide, a Twi'lek named Shul Vaal, was taking notes. "Same as the others?" Jaina asked when she got there.

Vaal nodded, completely calm and clinical. "Paranoia and hostility. No manifestation yet of Force powers he should not possess. Master Cilghal gave him a concussion and a broken nose."

"I had to end the fight quickly." Cilghal said, maybe a little defensively. "Sometimes to heal, you must first hurt."

"In just a few words, you've summed up my love life," Jaina sighed. "Anything I can do?"

Cilghal nodded. "Prep a shuttle. Before the government gets the bright idea to examine every vehicle leaving the Temple, I want to get Jedi Saar offworld and to the Transitory Mists."

And sometimes involving yourself in the care and treatment of mad Jedi meant agreeing to take them offworld under the threat of arrest without even questioning it. "Will do."

She left without another word and went to the civilian hangars. She needed something that would hold Saar as is, and a starfighter wasn't going to cut it. Besides, this was less conspicuous. Tyria Sarkin Tainer, the mechanic, was leaning against one of the shuttles, watching the footage of the outside of the Temple, and barely acknowledged Jaina. "Jedi Solo."

"Jedi Tainer. Is the other shuttle fit to fly?"

Tyria nodded. "I can have this one up and ready for you in half an hour, too."

"No need, one's enough," Jaina said, glancing at Tyria's hands, which were covered in grease. "I think I'll handle the sign-out myself."

"The smart choice," Tyria said, turning towards the engine component. "Don't ever marry a mechanic. Over the years, you pick up a lot of training, whether you want to or not. And then you're stuck on motor pool duty whenever you can't avoid it."

"I am a mechanic. And I like motor pool duty," Jaina said. She went to the console on the nearby desk, checking out the Lambda shuttle in question.

And then she sensed Tyria's tension and looked up. "What's wrong?"

"It looped," Tyria said, frowning at the monitor showing the news coverage.

"What?"

"The recording just looped. There was a little stutter and then it went back to the recording of several minutes ago. But it still says LIVE BROADCAST."

Uh oh. Jaina reached out with the Force to try and sense any anger or anything else that might signal an attack. What she did sense from somewhere was anticipation, and when you spent half your life in battle zones, you learned what that meant. She grabbed her comlink and thumbed it on. "Comm center, this is Jedi Solo."

A man's voice answered. "We read you, Solo."

"Tell Master Hamner possible attack imminent."

It said something that the man on the other end of the line didn't question it, and just said, "Will do." Tyria was wiping the grease from her arms, and Jaina walked out into the hall, trying to better focus on where that anticipatory feeling was coming from. Instead she heard the clunks of numerous doors shutting.

A young, black-haired apprentice was also in the hall, sensing it too. "Should I go up to the Main Hall?" he asked.

"Yes," she said, and then remembered the security agents right outside the Main Hall. "No. Wait here."

An alarm began sounding, and the Temple lights flickered right before her comlink started broadcasting a live line. "Alert, alert, Main Hall under attack. The doors are compromised-"

"State enemy strength and disposition," came Kenth Hamner's voice. He was very calm, which probably meant he was in military mode. Jaina was almost sorry she was missing that.

"It's Mandos," said the Jedi on the other end.

That was enough to get Jaina cursing. Sorry, impressionable young apprentice! You'd just learned some new words! She turned towards the turbolifts, but something told her not to go there, and she never ignored a hunch. Instead she looked at the apprentice. "What's your name?"

"Bandy Geffer, from Bespin."

"Apprentice Geffer, get to a hardwired intercom away from any outside wall. That's your position until I say different," she ordered. "Keep your comlink in hand and if it cuts out, give me a shout."

"Yes, Jedi Solo," he said, and immediately headed off.

Tyria appeared in the doorway, clean and with her lightsaber out. She ignored Jaina, looking down the hall and up at the ceiling, apparently trying to get a feel for their location. "I hate defending a position."

"Me, too."

The door that led to the StealthX hangar rattled in its frame, accompanied by the muted sound of an explosion. It would be shaped charges, simultaneously blasting several entry holes for commandos. She raced past the shuttle hangar, was unsurprised to hear Tyria running right behind her. "Inform control. Second attack prong is here."

"There's static on the comlinks now! I'm on the intercom," Tyria told her.

"Report the comm loss, too."

They both ran past the rattling door, reaching the coordinator's desk where Apprentice Geffer was sitting, and stopped, igniting their lightsabers. It was good timing, too, because the door blew out maybe a couple seconds later, along with four other nearby spots in the wall. A Mandalorian warrior stepped out from each hole, and turned towards the Jedi. After all her time on Mandalore, Jaina tried not to wonder whether she knew any of these fighters whose ass she was about to kick.

Well, she'd be kicking their asses in a minute anyway, since one Mando immediately shot some mini rockets towards them. Jaina and Tyria both leapt over or away from them, with Jaina using the Force to send some of the wall debris in front of the rockets to take the impact. It also had the bonus of knocking a couple of the Mandos of their feet.

"Nice," Tyria said approvingly.

"Thanks," Jaina shrugged.

Tyria looked back toward Apprentice Geffer. "Report five-plus Mandos. Tell them to consider sending reinforcements."

"I'll reinforce you-"

"Abandon your post and you'll be tasting my boot from a direction you never expected."

The fourth Mando darted forward as the fifth fired a second volley of rockets, and Jaina wasn't fast enough to use the same defense again. So Tyria leaped to her right to avoid them and Jaina just charged straight at the Mandos, not even reacting as a rocket passed by, maybe three centimeters from her. The charges hit the walls, causing damage and a shaking floor, and then Jaina was in the middle of the bad guys. Which was usually where she did her best work.

One of the Mandos fired some sort of net at her, but Jaina used the Force to direct it at another that was trying to come at her with a vibroblade. There were bonuses to fighting with enemies on all sides, and it was much easier to make them take each other out if you were good enough. She Force-yanked the net hard through one of the holes in the wall, sending that Mando flying. The one who'd fired the net hadn't let go of his gun, which meant he got pulled along with it. There were three left, and one was dealing with Tyria, though her lightsaber wasn't doing much good against the beskar armor the Mandos wore, and as Jaina was sidestepping blaster fire from another warrior, she realized Tyria had gone down. So Jaina used her motion to launch herself at the Mando who'd taken her out.

She could sense another… five Mandos nearing. Could she take nine on her own? Yeah, probably, but Tyria was down, there was an apprentice to worry about, and protecting them would keep things more interesting than she'd like.

From around the corner she heard, "I am Jedi Thul. I have not fought for real in many years. I should be a pushover. Come get me."

And apparently there was Raynar to worry about. Since being taken from the Killiks, he'd chosen to stay mostly in isolation at the Temple. Jaina had had very little contact with him since then, but from what she'd understood he hadn't quite recovered, and that went beyond the burn scars he'd suffered after Myrkr. Jaina heard the Mandos firing at him and the explosions that followed, but when she was able to spare a glance from her own fight, she saw that he and Geffer were doing pretty well at holding the Mandos off. In fact, Raynar had grabbed one of the Mandos and used her rocket launcher to fire on a couple of the other Mandos.

Okay, so he had this one. Time to deal with her own fight.

With the other Mandos off her list of things to immediately worry about, Jaina didn't have much trouble at all taking hers out. If she didn't kill them, she made sure that they wouldn't be getting up again for a while. Then she made her way over to Tyria, and while she was bigger than Jaina, it wasn't that hard to carry her for long enough to get her out of the way.

When she turned the corner, she saw Apprentice Geffer was gone, and Raynar had a sling for his clearly broken arm. He just gave her a nod.

"This level is indefensible," she told him, but wasn't stopping to talk long. "There are holes where the StealthX hangar exterior doors should be. There may be more Mandos massing outside."

He followed her to the turbolifts, saying, "Let's go up one level, lock down the lifts, and hold there."

She nodded. "How'd the new boy do?"

"Not bad. Not so good at taking orders," Raynar said. "I remember when you were like that."

Jaina grinned at him as they stepped into the turbolift. "Still am."
