Muunilinst- Friday
Earlier this week they'd gotten the call from Tahiri that they'd found the people responsible. Jaina had left right away to deal with it, and then Jag had left the boys with Anakin to go home for the first time in months.
"Did that island break you? Because this is crazy," Jaina said, glaring.
The ringleader of the plot, who all evidence showed was a big name in their rebellion, had been arrested. Jag had gone to the detention center, with guards of course, to have what turned out to be a very long conversation, and came back with an idea. Then he got to return to the safehouse and tell the others what he'd decided, and no one was pleased. His chief of security and top adviser were both looking like they were trying to come up with the most diplomatic way to tell him no, while Jaina was just pacing like a caged animal.
"It's unconventional," he allowed. "And I think it's a very large reason it'll work."
Jaina finally stopped pacing. "You want to hire her. You're literally going to invite the people who tried to kill you and your family right up close to you."
"She won't be that close," Jag promised.
"This is not a good idea," Narus told him. "I can't sign off on this."
"You'll have to," Jag told him seriously. "I don't often pull rank, but I am now. I think this needs to happen to stop it from escalating."
"There was a bomb in a speeder, how much more escalated do you think it'll get?" Jaina demanded, finally stopping the pacing.
He held his hands out in a placating gesture. "I don't want to quash dissenting voices. I want to hear them. That's the sort of thing that should set this Empire apart from the one that enslaved populations and blew up planets. Muriya has a perspective I don't have, and one I'm not getting elsewhere."
Tanders spoke up. "We're sourcing all the information we can-"
"This isn't a criticism. These are people who couldn't get their message heard at large, and so they went underground, where we didn't have a chance to hear anything unless it involved blaster fire," Jag told them. "And, realistically, it's easier to keep an eye on them before there's more blaster fire."
"Keep your enemies close, and all," Jaina said with a sigh. She was still upset. "That doesn't actually help."
Jag looked at the other two, and made a vague nod towards the door. "We'll make arrangements later."
Jaina watched them leave, and the instant the door was closed, she said, "No. I'm all for dissenting voices, it's not like I've never been part of a coup or anything, but they tried to kill our kids."
"I never forget that," he told her. "She doesn't even need to be on Bastion for this. We'll be as sneaky as we have to be there. The arrest means she will never get close to our personal information. This doesn't end otherwise. We can't stay in Fandom forever."
"There has to be another way," she said.
"Then what's your solution?"
Jaina sighed, raised her arms at her sides and let the drop, a clear sign of frustration. "I don't know. Not this."
"What would your mother think about this?" Jag countered.
"It's not fair to pull that," she said.
Jag raised an eyebrow, waiting for an actual response.
"If you do this, and that's a big if, you're consulting with her." Because she knew damn well that Leia would have a way to make it work. Diplomacy and families in danger, she knew a lot about those things.
"Fair," he agreed. "If it would make you feel better, you and the boys could stay in Fandom for a bit longer. We can get things settled here, make sure there are safety nets in place for them."
"The fact that I'm mad doesn't mean I want anything to happen to you, either," Jaina said.
"I'll have Tahiri," he said. "I'll have a security team who will make themselves the bane of my existence after this. I'll have the Knights. I am going to be the most protected, most annoyed man in the galaxy."
