Somewhere French in Philipsburg, Wednesday daytime

Jaina wasn't having the best vacation, but she was trying to salvage what she could out of the rest of it. It helped a lot (and improved her mood) that she was able to spend time with John when he wasn't passed out on the floor, too.

They found a little restaurant on the island, though Jaina wasn't touching her food much. What, she'd won money last night, she could waste if she wanted to. "So how are you doing?" she asked, sipping her drink instead.

"Better than expected," John told her. And maybe it was the sunglasses or the Tylenol, but John suspected it was just being on vacation that made his hangover not so terrible. "Something wrong with your food?"

"Not that hungry, I guess," she admitted. And okay, there was a tiny bit of her who'd spent too long on rations and in refugee camps to make her not want to waste it. "Want some?"

"I'm good, thanks," he said, patting his stomach. The sunshine and warmth made him less hungry. "I was pleasantly surprised you wanted to come out today. Vacation's better with you in it."

She'd thought he'd been having plenty of fun without her. Probably moreso. "Yeah, maybe I can start enjoying it," she half-grumbled.

"Only you can decide you're on vacation," he pointed out. "I'm not your cruise director." He had given up on that Monday.

She fixed him with a look, and asked, "Okay, I'm just gonna ask. Are you planning to break up with me in eight weeks? Seven and a half?"

Way to beat around the bush, Jaina.

John blinked at the topic change. "What?"

"Monday. You complained about me working when we only have eight weeks left, which isn't the first time you've brought it up, which is fine, except every time you do, you make it sound like one of us is terminal," she explained. She was doing a good job of seeming totally okay with the subject, too. "And then you ditch out on me for two days to get really drunk like you're my dad circa two years ago. So. Is that the plan?"

"First of all, I did not ditch out on you. You could have come along. You could have hung out. You chose not to, do not put that on me." John was actually kind of offended she would try.

"Second, I can't help being aware that graduation is a date that moves closer and closer every day. My life is sort of hinged around it even if yours isn't, but Jesus, Jaina? You think I'd break up with you?" Had she met him?

"We fought. I wasn't going to go looking for you," she pointed out. "When I found you on the floor the next morning, I kind of figured you didn't want to see me anyway. And yeah, put everything together and I start wondering if you're thinking this has a shelf life. I'm glad I'm wrong then, but it's kind of been a concern the last few days."

"What, one disagreement and you don't wanna talk to me? Now I'm really surprised you're here," John grumbled, having thought they were beyond that after all the crap from the summer.

"That's not what I said," Jaina said. "I did want to talk to you. But what was I going to do, chase you down at a bar to talk? I can't see that doing me any good."

"It might have," he said. "I know I would've been happy to see you."

"You seemed to be doing fine on your own," she pointed out.

"What? You saw me and didn't say hi?" John wondered.

"No, I mean when you came back to the room last night you'd obviously been having fun."

"Yeah, I had fun hanging out with our friends," he told her.

"See, you didn't need me. It's just..." Jaina sighed, and ran her hand through her hair. "Okay, you caught me in an insecure week."

"So tell me about it," he said encouragingly.

She shrugged slightly, sitting back in her seat. "I don't know. I feel completely out of place here. I'm not sure if it's because I feel so much older than everyone or because I was never one to go out partying and spend the next day doing nothing to begin with, but it's just not my thing."

"Everyone," he repeated, wondering where she was going with this.

She might've included him in on that, too, yes. So she ignored that part. "And no matter what, no matter how much I think I stick out, I'm stuck here for the rest of the week. So, not my favorite trip ever."

"But while you're feeling stuck and obviously not enjoying yourself, I'm supposed to do what, in your mind?" John asked.

"Not break up with me in eight weeks," Jaina said honestly. The fact that she'd been wrong was actually a huge help. "I don't want you to not have fun. Just because I'm not doesn't mean I should drag you down with me."

She paused. "And I'm suggest a night on the beach but that'd cause problems when the boat left without us."

"If you'd let it, this trip could do you wonders," John told her, sighing a little because he suspected she wouldn't let it. "Even if we can't stay overnight."

"It's not that I haven't tried," Jaina protested. "I'll have you know I'm much richer than I was yesterday at this time, thank you." Not that much.

"Okay, so come out with me," he offered. "My fun is contagious. As you might remember."

"Oh, I'll remember," she promised. "Someone has to make sure you can get in the room."

"Nope, if you're going with me, we're matching drinks," he teased. "You're not my babysitter, you're the girlfriend who needs to lower her inhibitions once in a while."

Jaina was about to protest that he had way more tolerance and she weighed like a hundred pounds, then instead said, "Fine. But you have to keep pace with me."

She was a slow drinker, she saw it as a sneaky little compromise.

"Fine, but I get to pick the drinks," John smirked. He was not born yesterday, no.

"Fine." If it was gross or too strong, she could still go slow. "You're on."

"Good," John said. "I promise you'll have fun or you can stay in the room with your comm the rest of the week without a word from me."

Just looks, most likely.

"Hey. People bring books to read on the deck, I can bring my datapad. I am all about the compromise here," she promised. "No hermitage needed."

"Books are a cover for watching pretty people in very little clothing swim around in the pool," John pointed out.

She frowned. "For everyone?"

"Depends on if you can visually track their progress through the book," John replied. "Of course, that's a little lame to try so I'm going with yes."

"Also requires powers I don't have. All right fine, I'll be the one actually reading." Though she was pretty sure Cal would be there with her on that. Maybe.

Not if she was in a swimsuit.

"We'll have to get you a big straw hat and special nose suntan lotion if that's the case."

"Don't you dare," Jaina said. "I'm not even pink this time. And I was in the water, too."

"I missed you in the water?" Now he was sad.

Being past the potential argument portion of this talk, she wasn't going to remind him where he'd been instead. "I might be persuaded to go again."

"Though, I should say it won't possibly be as good as the empty Onsen. I don't need other people in the pool."

"There are hot tubs," she pointed out.

"Where Chuck Bass was making out with some random guy," John replied. He listened to radio, oh yes. "Let's avoid soaking in Chuck's filth."

Oh, look, an actual laugh. "Maybe a different deck."
