Ebaq 9, Monday after classes Fandom time

John and Jaina didn't even have time to get to quarters on Ralroost before Twin Suns was reassigned. Then it was off to one of the moons of Ebaq, a little hunk of rock on which they had a base. For some reason. Jaina didn't even pretend to know.

She'd never really been involved in the setup of a base before, save from helping to fix the occasional mechanical problem on Eclipse,.but here she was working alongside General Farlander on things including a bunker system hidden in the moon in case of emergencies, and how to escape to them. There wasn't really any other defense on Ebaq 9 save for hiding, since everything around here was just a dead end. It was kind of sad that she was past that seeming ominous to her anymore. And though she didn't want to admit it, it was a lot of work. This on top of having spent weeks being harassed by everyone via comm and having a surplus of messages waiting for her to deal with when she was done being seven. Add in nuisances like the fact that the heating in the pilots' quarters didn't work and the whole place had shoddy gravity (but only sometimes) and Jaina was already over this trip.

It was a relief when she got word that Jacen was coming down from Ralroost to see her. She met him at the docking bay, giving him a hug and being glad that she could launch into complaints with him right away. "I don't know what we're doing here," she told him. "Half the time we're drilling on launching to defend the system, and the rest of the exercises have us running for the bunkers."

"We've got dozens of capital ships here," Jacen told her. "We have all the Jedi we need to form a meld. We can start joining exercises."

Which was more to do, though she knew that had to be done. Everything had to be done. "You all can't run for the bunkers," she pointed out. "This is worse than anything I've ever seen. I hate this- I'm just nailed to this rock. It's like we have a huge target sign pasted on us. I'm best if I'm given freedom of action- freedom to be the Trickster. That's the role that works for me."

Jacen didn't answer right away, but when he did, it was obvious something was wrong. "I just realized what's happening."

Jaina wasn't sure she wanted to know.

He told her anyway. "You're the bait," he said. "You're the bait that will bring the Yuuzhan Vong here. And I'm the bait, too."

*****

It wasn't as bad as it seemed. It actually made a lot of sense when it was all explained: Jacen and Jaina, the same twins the Yuuzhan Vong were gunning for in order to complete their sacrifice and part of the Jedi elite that would be known to be here, would stay in an "secret base" with no real defenses and no real escape, where they looked like easy pickings. And when the Vong came for them, they'd find that it wasn't quite that simple, what with all the capital ships and Jedi around. It also had the benefit of being an Ackbar plan. It would have been nice if they''d been informed before being set up for it, but there wasn't anything to be done about it now.

It just meant that Jaina had to drill her pilots harder, make sure they were ready for it, and hope John didn't hate her too much for it later. The trouble was, she didn't think she was ready. Her grandfather had told her she was burning out, and though she'd still deny it aloud, she was starting to admit to herself that he was right. She was always tired, always worried, and it wasn't a problem that just kept to this galaxy either. This had started in Fandom. And if she couldn't get away from all the stress a whole galaxy away, she honestly didn't know how much longer she was going to keep this up.

But for now, she'd make sure everyone else was prepared.

[NFB, NFI, OOC okay. Shortest one I've ever done omg. Dialogue (what there is of it) from Destiny's Way by Walter Jon Williams. Almost done with it, yay!]
