Room 527, Tuesday evening

After a while, Jaina decided she couldn't take it anymore. While she was pretty sure she'd know if John died in the course of the day, she also wanted to see for herself that nothing had gone horribly wrong during class.

So this was her coming upstairs to poke her head in. "Everyone still alive in here?"

It was shocking, really, how he retained all his limbs. But, there was John, flopped on his bed and watching some guy nearly cut off his finger on Deadliest Catch.

He led such a busy life.

"Alive, if suffering from bleach inhalation. Come on in!"

She stepped inside, closing the door. "Or should I leave that open to keep air flowing?" she asked.

"It's all in my brain by now," John pointed out. "Maybe your gramps really did kill me. Just super slow speed."

"He's not that subtle," she said, taking a seat next to him. "Was it bad?"

"Eh, it was nothing new," he shrugged. "...Unless thinking it was terrible gets me something."

"Anything you get, you'd be getting anyway," she told him. "Good, then I don't have to scream at him Thursday." She could just avoid him altogether.

"Like I need you screaming at him on my behalf," John said, poking at her side.

"Sometimes he needs to be screamed at," Jaina said seriously. Ignore her squirming at the poke.

"Yeah, but I think I can manage for me," he pointed out. "You scream for you and in general."

"This one is half my fault," she pointed out. "And when the only reason he gets on your case is because you dared to date me... Have I mentioned how much I hate that, by the way?"

"Maybe once or twice," he shrugged. "You know, if anyone has the right to hate me for existing, it's probably your dad."

"And he'd still probably threaten you, but he wouldn't actually mean it," she said. "I think it's safee to say he's okay with it."

"Also, I think he understands that you're not a kid." Even if John sort of still was.

"Yeah. And he's the one who's known me since I was born," Jaina said. "I think he just likes to know I'm happy."

That should not make John feel the need to wrap his arms around her. "I like to know you're happy."

"You should, it's all your fault," she said with a little smile.

"I don't care about why, it's just good to hear," he said, and see how he wasn't letting go.

"And I didn't die." Someone was proud.

"And it's really good to hear that," she said, leaning into him. "Not that I was worried or anything." Not seriously. Probably.

"I wasn't as worried as I was concerned he would do something to keep me busy and far from you. Not that it would ever work." Because some people were just willful.

"That definitely wouldn't fly," Jaina stated. "Even it we'd meant to do anything in the first place."

"Which we hadn't," he reminded her. "And I bet we can manage the rest of the summer to not end up on radio or anywhere we don't want to be." He had faith in them.

"That sounds like a really good challenge, actually," Jaina grinned.

"So long as you don't take it as a challenge to go without," he said. "Because that would be stupid."

"That's not the first time you've brought that up," she noted. "It's not going to happen without a really good reason, I can tell you that much."

"Are you aware there are people who think, 'Oh hey, we're gonna be apart for a while, let's practice not having sex.'" He was disturbed.
