Room 313- Wednesday evening

There was something kind of comforting about making plans for a trip home (especially after that gremlin bite which was not to be mentioned), even if it now meant pulling out calendars and trying to work out timing. Even when she knew that she could very well end up staying longer at home than she meant to, since every time she seemed to get into some sort of trouble that kept her there and getting captured or nearly killed. Bring it on. It was a very wrong kind of normal, but it was a normal she needed sometimes.

Once she'd gotten things settled, she made a couple calls to let people know, and started playing with her phone to see if there was any way to schedule herself in there too. There had to be an app for this big a scale...

Oh, like Tahiri wasn't going to come marching down to the third floor after she got that message.

"I get updates now?"

What? It made her happy.

"What? I get them from you," Jaina pointed out, looking up from her phone.

"Well, yeah, but." She didn't really have a comeback for that. "You're sure it's nothing major this time?"

As if it hadn't been enough that she'd been up and about for work and various clubs and fairs and sundries, Valentine had been out in the preserve and came back into the room. She set her laptop aside (yes, she'd brought it with her to the woods), and then dropped unceremoniously onto her bed and gave Jaina a tired, but accomplished sort of smile.

"How goes it, Solo?"

"Positive," she said. "Jag's talking about changing up the roster a bit, and I would like to be there to choose who's in my squadron and get them all up to speed. If there's anything going on, I haven't been brought in on it yet."

"Trip-planning," she replied. She looked up at her, noting, "Tired?"

It was kind of neat that she actually understood that now instead of just getting it in theory. "Oh. Yeah, that makes sense," Tahiri agreed. Not that she had much faith in "nothing going on" ever lasting for the Skywalker-Solo family, but why bring that up? "So just a couple of days. That's not too bad."

"I'm not worried. It never helps anyway. Did you really come down just to question getting updates?" And if she looked amused, well, shh.

Yes. "No," Tahiri said. "I came to shake you down for the details you didn't leave in your message."

Because that would ever happen.

"Busy day," Valentine said with a shrug. "Productive. Trip where?"

Jaina raised an eyebrow. "You know if I didn't disclose details I might not have been able to disclose them? Then where would we be?"

"Home. For some busy days of my own doing administrative work and maybe getting out in a ship." Ha. She'd definitely end up in a ship and part of her had to know that.

Tahiri crossed her arms and leaned against the doorframe. "Pretty much right where we are now. I do get how that goes now, you know."

Valentine grinned a little at that. "You'll have to send me a post card," she said. "And one of these days, I've really got to bug you about space travel..."

"I know. Still strange to get used to sometimes," she admitted. "I think because I haven't worked with you in that capacity myself, really."

"Bug me about which part?" she wondered, putting her phone down and sitting back a bit.

"Knowing you were out there in the meld isn't quite the same when there were a couple hundred other beings in it," Tahiri agreed. "So if nothing huge is going on, I'm guessing there hasn't been a whole lot of progress."

"Any of it, really," Valentine shrugged. "When Ender's out of here, we'll be going to colonies. It's nothing new for him, but I've been mostly earthbound my entire life. I've read up on theory and the physics and all that, but scholarship only gets you so far."

"Or I'm just not in the know," Jaina shrugged. "Which seems to happen a lot more than I'd like." She'd like it to happen never.

"It wasn't me this time?" Tahiri offered. "Well, at least not me me."

Jaina shrugged, considering this. "It's kind of hard for me to pin down describing any one thing," she said. "I've lived on and visited so many planets I don't think I can even name them all." And now at least two didn't really exist anymore.

"I mean professionally," she assured her. "I kind of miss the days when the goddess could say the word and get all the information without question. Now they give me lip."

"When was the first time you went into space? It's probably something you've just grown up with."

A tiny bit of tension showed in Tahiri's eyes for just a second before she laughed. "Obviously you need to impress them with a brilliant new strategy or two and reassert your divinity, Cloaked One."

"I don't even remember it. I was a baby at the time," Jaina said, thinking back. "The first time I really remember it, it was when I came home when I was like, two. It's as natural as driving is to people here, I guess."

"I had them going for a while when I first started spending the weekend at John's," Jaina said. She could give away this part. Tahiri's Jaina couldn't have this trick. "Time moves so fast there, they couldn't understand how they'd get all these reports and work back from me within minutes from when they sent it. That was fun till they got used to it."

"That's just because they all know you're really that astral anyway," Tahiri informed her. Not that she was biased or anything.

"I'm hopeless," Valentine said with a laugh. "I don't know how to drive, either. Thankfully, I mean, I won't be flying the ships. Passenger only. One way trip."

She straightened and buffed her nails on her shirt. "The new strategy thing would probably help more, though."

"Driving's easy," said Jaina, who'd done it once. A year and a half ago. "So why would you be going to these colonies?"

Tahiri grinned at the gesture. "It is sort of what Yun-Harla's supposed to do, after all."

"A new start, in a way," Valentine said, finding herself shrugging a little. "It's weird back home. When you've had your whole life revolve around a specific thing and then that thing is suddenly gone, there's a certain sense of losing yourself. I just happen to feel like the place to find myself again is the colonies. They need someone to write their story."

"One of the issues with being here," Jaina sighed. "Some parts are easier than others when you're this remote."

Oh, wouldn't that feel appropriate in a few months. "You've never been there?"

"I think you do pretty well," Tahiri reassured her. "You'll come up with something."

"Just once," Valentine admitted with a faint smile. "There's an outlying station where Ender was staying immediately after war, used to be a Bugger home, but that's as far as I've been."
