Room 527, Sunday night

To be completely honest, Jaina wasn't sure why she was here. Today had been entirely messed up, and suddenly she was agreeing to meet her twenty-years-older apparent ex at his "old" room. She really did want to talk, to find out what was new and how he was, and also because anything else they usually got up to might be considered a felony here at the moment.

Taking a breath, she knocked on the door.

"Fine! I wouldn't wish an insane you on any version of me," he teased. "Yes."

That was surprising. She hadn't actually expected the answer to be yes.

And because she was still seventeen and kind of a brat, she smiled and teased, "Which movie?"

He shook his head, "Not telling." Stubborn teenage self still very evident in the nearly-forty-year-old's attitude.

"I didn't actually expect you to," she said. "I am very proud of us for that, though."

"It was really impressive," he agreed. "Something for you to look forward to." He was obviously teasing, since there would have to be special circumstances involved for the two of them to ever make it through an entire movie.

To be completely honest, if he'd said no, the movie night guise really probably would have been over. "I don't know how I'll stand the anticipation," she said, very seriously.

"Your best bet would be to constantly choose movies that I-he would hate," he said, trying not to smile.

And now she was trying not to laugh. "You're really giving me advice on this?"

"Hey, I'm just looking out for my-his best interests," John told her.

"He used to be you," she reminded him. "Is you. Whatever. I think you can stop correcting yourself."

"I could, but I don't want to confuse myself," he replied.

"You get used to the confusion after a while," Jaina assured him, because really.

The things he could say about confusion. He wondered if coming back from this experience was going to be anything like leaving the time-dilation field. "Yes but, you know, he might not be me."

"Might not end up as you, you mean?" she frowned.

"Right," he nodded, what with the possibility of Mensa!John out there. He tried not to shudder at that thought.

"But you were definitely him," she said, and thought about this. "I'm managing to confuse myself more."

"Probably best not to think about it," he said, reaching out to pat her arm.

She managed not to look down at his hand, not sure if she should feel strange about that or not, and if it was stranger that she didn't. "I may be stuck with it," she said wryly.

His pat didn't linger. "Yes, well, I'm sure you have some Jedi mind trick of suppression."

"Luke had to have used something."

And as soon as he pulled away, she realized that as much as she liked talking with him, and as weirdly familiar as it was, she kind of missed the John she knew. "I think we usually rely on things like human nature for that," she said. "...I should go."

"Probably a good idea," he agreed. "It really was good to see you."

"You too," she said, though it seemed totally pointless to her. She swung her feet onto the floor and stood, not sure what to say at this point. "So... good luck."

"Thanks," he replied, standing and moving toward the door. "Um, good luck to you, too."

This was probably right up there in what would probably be the top five most awkward goodbyes of her life. The entire way to the door she was wondering if there was anything she was supposed to say in this sort of situation, and by the time she got there, she had nothing but "Bye, John."

It was just so tempting. But he kept himself in check and offered her his hand with a little nod. "Bye, Jaina."
