MCA #6- Tuesday early morning

The nice thing about beautiful warm weather was that it allowed you to do things like sleep with the windows open.

The bad thing about sudden freezing temperatures and snow was that it could wake you up from a dead sleep because you'd slept with your windows open.

Which was how Jaina woke up today. Well, that and the sound of wind that she initially thought she dreamed. After a sleepy moment of trying to convince herself that if she just maybe tucked her blankets around her like a cocoon she'd be warm again, she got up to close the window... and looked out to see a blizzard outside. Grumbling to herself and thoroughly annoyed that now she had to deal with an apartment that was much colder than it should be, she figured finding warmer clothes to sleep in might be a good idea. Except for how when she turned on the light, nothing happened. She tried flipping another switch to make sure it wasn't something like a burnt-out bulb, and no, the power was just out.

"Oh, kriff you too, Fandom," she muttered in annoyance, making her way to her closet in the dark. Luckily she was still really good at that. And now she was cold and awake too early and annoyed and wondering how far the power outage went in case it affected her training today. (You have your priorities, she has hers.)

She'd opened herself up for that one. "Shelley, do you not want to go home?"

It was that or someone actually wanted to hang out with Jaina, and that would never happen.

"It's just so cold there," she said. Not that it was any warmer here. "And it just feels empty." Yes, she was lonely. And yes, her bottom lip did stick out just a little.

Jaina could see that, actually. She could handle being alone in the dark and cold fine now, but that didn't mean it couldn't suck. "Okay, you can hang out here," she said. "But once it's light and hopefully not blizzarding I have to try and get outside."

"Awesome!" Shelley attempted to clap, but really just brought two parts of the blanket together for some barely audible thumping. "What are you doing outside? Going for a jog? I thought about that, but not in this cold."

"See if I can get some training in," she said, "or going up to the school to see if my grandfather made it in. You know, thrilling things. You can sit if you want."

Was it sad that she'd totally brave a blizzard to do those thrilling things? Proably. Oops.

Shelley shuffled over to the couch and let herself fall into it. "That sounds exciting," Shelley lied. "Is your grandfather just coming in for a visit?"

As she talked, Jaina made her way to the closet to get a couple extra blankets, putting one on the arm of the sofa in case Shelley wanted it. "No, he teaches here, but he lives on the mainland with his wife and their daughter. You don't know Anakin Skywalker, do you?"

She hoped not. She wanted to witness a meeting like that.

"I don't think I have," she said, giving it some serious thought. "Wait, does he work at the bar and have like bushy eyebrows that you like wanna pluck but then realize they're actually kind of hot looking on him? No, wait," she corrected herself, "you said he's your grandfather and this guy is young. Never mind."

She flopped about, getting more comfortable.

"My grandfather looks about our age," Jaina said, and looked at her. "Wait, whose eyebrows do you want to pluck?"

"Okay, I don't really remember his name," she admitted, "but we totally hooked up. I should have done my trick to remember his name, but I just didn't."

She closed her eyes, trying to picture the night. "Um, maybe it was Buck. Yeah, Buck. I think."

"Chuck." And why did it not surprise her that Chuck and Shelley had hooked up. "And I can definitely say I have never once paid attention to his eyebrows and now I'm afraid I have to."

"Chuck!" she agreed, snapping her fingers (not that it made much noise under the blanket). "Eyes are really one of the first things I notice about guys," she said. "They're like the nipples of the face, and the eyebrows are just right there with them."

Um. "That's an... interesting analogy," Jaina said, sitting in the chair and pulling a blanket around her.

"What do you check out first?" Shelley inquired. "Like your favorite body part or feature?"

She paused. "I've never thought about it," she said honestly. "I mean, I guess I like eyes. I don't think I really check guys out that much."

"Really? I don't think I could not check a guy out," she admitted. "It's like an inborn instinct, you know? Like how baby turtles crawl straight towards the ocean when they're born."

Yeah, someone feel asleep to the nature channel last night.

One half of Jaina's mouth turned up in a smile at that one. "I don't hook up and I hardly date. And most of the guys that even get a shot are ones I've known for a while first. Or I have to work with the cute ones, or something, so there's not a point."

"But you've got such great features," Shelley said, confused. "I would think you would be beating the guys away with a stick." Obviously, the men of Fandom were stupid.

"Thanks," she said, kind of flattered. She didn't usually get flattered. "I'm too busy for guys, anyway, and you throw in a few spectacularly failed relationships and I'll save myself the headache. You never get tired of dealing with all that?"

"It's not like I've had a real relationship since I got here," she pointed out. "Most of the guys I've met just haven't seemed very interested in taking past, you know, just having some fun."

She sighed. "And that was okay, I think, because I had Dimitri around, and even though we weren't together, he filled some kind of gap for me. And now he's gone."

"I get that," she admitted. "Like it's okay as long as you have some kind of meaningful relationship somewhere?"

"Right." She balled up a little tighter under her blanket. "But I've been making myself get out there more, trying to make friends - see if anyone might be serious dating material."

"Good luck there," she said, meaning it. "I'm trying to get out there, too, but it's mainly due to boredom."

"Maybe I need a new hobby or something," she mused. "I tried the whole knitting thing for a while, but that didn't go too well. I'm not so good with needles and counting."

"You have to count to knit?" Obviously Jaina had not tried that ever.
