The Gilad Pellaeon- Tuesday
Jaina's absolute least favorite assignments were the ones where she had to play diplomatic escort. They were boring. Sure, she might break some bones or hurt her brain or nearly get blown up a lot of the time, but at least the missions where that happened didn't mean having to sit there and deal with politics. At least the Bothan that she was escorting didn't seem too bad, and the trip was short, and there was a major plus in this for her.
Once their shuttle had boarded the Gilad Pellaeon, they walked down the boarding ramp into a very Imperial setup. There were lines of white stormtroopers standing in formation, various officers in their gray and white uniforms, and in the center of it all was Jag.
Considering the location, all he was able to offer Jaina was a shared look of 'hi, we'll do this for real later' as he instead had to greet the Bothan while an Alliance functionary introduced them. "Imperial Head of State the most honorable Jagged Fel, may I present Senator Tiurrg Drey'lye of Bothawui, head of the Senate Unification Preparations Committee."
Jag shook the Senator's furry hand. "I'm pleased to be working with you."
"And delighted to meet you," Drey'lye said. "Chief of State Daala sends her compliments and looks forward to meeting you when you make planetfall."
Jag nodded. "And now, I believe, protocol insists that we open a bottle or a dozen of wine and make some preliminary discussion of security, introduction protocols, and so on."
"Fortunately about the wine, and regrettably about everything else, you are correct."
It took two hours. Two hours. Jaina didn't even have anything to do except to be the Jedi face at this meeting, so she spent the entire time sitting in the conference room, trying not to fall asleep or get caught checking her chrono every ten minutes. Finally Jag persuaded Drey'lye to accept a tour of the ship while he excused himself for a private consultation with the Jedi representative. And as soon as the doors closed and he'd set the locks to respond only to the two of them, he was able to finally turn his attention to Jaina.
Who frowned at him. "You're not fooling anyone, Fel. You're planning for an Imperial invasion of Alliance space."
Jag nodded. "I've been planning it for a while. Come here."
Every once in a while, Jaina had no problem doing what she was told. She got up from her seat to go right ahead and settle herself in his lap, because it'd been two hours that she hadn't been able to make out with her boyfriend for a minute and these things had to be taken care of.
"This isn't going to be a routine part of your consultations with every Jedi," Jaina said, pulling back and smiling.
"Uh, no. That would cause some trouble here and at home. But I actually do have business with the Jedi that does not involve the Galactic Alliance, at least not initially."
"What sort of business?" she asked.
"Whether or not the Galactic Empire joins with the Galactic Alliance, I think there ought to be an official Jedi presence in the Empire. A second Temple, a branch, an offshoot, whatever. Providing advice and insight to the Head of State."
"And protection?"
Jag shrugged. "Less of an issue. I'm doing all right. Two years in this position and not dead yet."
"Emperor Palpatine went nearly twenty-five years," Jaina pointed out.
"I guess that makes him my hero."
Somewhere her grandfather was probably having a sudden coronary and didn't know why. "Don't say that even in jest," she said, and turned more serious. "Jag, if the Remnant doesn't join the Alliance, I'm not sure the Jedi can have a presence without Alliance approval."
"The Order still keeps its training facility for youngsters in Hapan space. And the Hapans haven't rejoined."
"You sound annoyed," Jaina noticed. "The Hapans still giving you trouble?"
It'd been an ongoing issue ever since around the time Zekk had resurfaced there, one that Jaina had heard various complaints about over the last year and a half, but this time he went with a simple, "Let's not talk about that."
So she didn't. "Besides, moving the school back to Alliance space is just a matter of time, logistics, and finances; there's no question that it will happen. On the other hand, it's very likely that the government would withhold approval for a Jedi branch in the Remnant just out of spite, if the Remnant doesn't join."
"Well, there's such a thing as an unofficial Jedi presence," Jag said. "And there's such a thing as rival schools, schismatic branches, and places for former Jedi to go when they can't be at the Temple."
Jaina smiled wryly. "You just want to have this so I'll be assigned to come to the Remnant and set it up."
Jag smiled back, but briefly. "That's a motive, but not the only one," he admitted. "Remember, to the Moffs and to a lot of the Imperial population, the Jedi have been bogeymen since Palpatine died. At the very least, I don't want them to be inappropriately afraid of the woman I'm in love with."
When she really thought about the whole situation- and that was often, given that she'd been in a long distance relationship between two governments for two years- it definitely looked like a mess. And she'd be lying if she said that there wasn't some stress in hoping that the Remnant did join, largely because she just wanted this to work out already.
"Have we talked enough politics?" Jaina asked after a moment of silence.
"I think so."
"Good."
