The Jedi Temple- later Wednesday night
Jaina met up with Dab and returned to the Temple from there, and the second she was out of his sight she found Mirax and Tahiri on the way to the medical level, carrying Seff between them with his arms over their shoulders like they were helping a drunk friend home. "Any problems with your observer?" Tahiri asked as they joined Jaina in the turbolift.
"No," Jaina said. "He sympathized with me for not catching any petty criminals tonight."
Tekli let them into the medical level, through doors warning "RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS, AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY." Tekli tapped the access code to open the doors and explained, "Master Cilghal and I are the only ones authorized to enter. Even Master Hamner must come to us. This is the lesser of two radiation storage chambers. I've moved all the materials that belong here into the primary chamber."
Once inside they got to work strapping Seff to the bed and hooking him up to monitors. It was quick work, but when it was done Jaina finally relaxed. "You're all right here?" she asked Tekli.
Tekli nodded. "Fine, fine."
"Everybody, come up to the main level," Jaina said. "You can get cleaned up- plenty of extra clothes around- and grab a cup of caf. Rest for a few minutes."
"Have to get back to our quarters," Mirax said. "There's no telling when Corran will be back."
"I wish I could," Winter said apologetically.
"I'll get you back out the same hangar you came in. No worries," Jaina assured them. "Tahiri?"
"I don't know," Tahiri said hesitantly. "There are plenty of Jedi who don't remember me fondly-"
"And they should know that you and I are good terms," Jaina said. "It'll make them think about things."
Fresh from a sanisteamsingular, apparently and in clean garments, Jaina and Tahiri nursed fresh cups of caf and talked, their voices low. There was hardly anyone in the common dining hall now, so the two of them could have time to themselves and not worry about anyone else.
Of course, Jaina caught Tahiri's wistful look around the room and had to ask, "You miss it?"
Tahiri nodded.
"Then come back."
"No," Tahiri said, shaking her head. "Not yet, anyway… Have you suddenly acquired the Luke Skywalker urge to save everybody, one person at a time?"
"Better than the Darth Vader urge to make the galaxy a better place by destroying everything that doesn't behave," Jaina countered.
"True. Jacen had enough of that for both of you."
Hearing things like that was still a little weird for Jaina, but before she could actually feel weird about it, she noticed Dab entering through the main doorway.
He waved before coming over to the table. "Jedi Solo. You couldn't sleep either?"
"That's it," Jaina lied. "Dab, you remember Tahiri Veila."
"Do I ever," he said, reaching out a hand for her to shake. "Good to see you again. You probably don't remember me. From Borleias. Dab Hantaq."
It wasn't till Jaina actually looked at Tahiri, her eyes wide and face frozen in shock, that she realized her mistake. If seeing Anakin's face had shaken her, she couldn't imagine what it had to be doing to Tahiri. She made her voice gentle, saying, "Tahiri, you knew him as Tarc. Remember little Tarc?"
"Tarc," Tahiri repeated. "Little Tarc. Yes, of course."
Dab dropped his hand finally. "Would you two care for company?"
Jaina might not have minded if she was alone, but she wasn't about to put Tahiri through that. "Girl talk. Sorry."
"Understood. Good night, ladies," he said, and turned to try and find the caf cart.
Tahiri finally put her cup of caf down, still looking shellshocked. "He's… He's Anakin."
Jaina nodded. "Remember, that's why Senator Shesh chose him all those years ago. A distraction because of the way that he looked."
"You could have told me."
"I had gotten used to it. I wasn't even thinking about it when I put the Darkmeld team together," Jaina said apologetically. "I forgot. I'm sorry."
"Forgot," Tahiri repeated. "And you want me to come back? With him here every day?"
"The observers won't be here forever. Nawara Ven says that the High Court is leaning towards reviewing the whole executive order about the Jedi. If they do, they're sure to strike down most of its provisions, including the observers-"
"That's not the luck I deserve, and it's not what I'll get," Tahiri sighed. "I'll come back, and they'll give me him as an observer. That's what I'll get."
Considering Jaina wasn't sure Dab hadn't been assigned to her on purpose, she couldn't exactly argue against that. So instead, she tried to change the subject. "Your lightsaber."
"What?"
"You lost your lightsaber at the prison."
Tahiri nodded, confused.
"If they find it…"
"Oh." Tahiri actually looked like she was trying to put things aside to deal with this. "I don't think it will be a problem."
"Why not?"
"It's probably crushed under tons of rock. It may never be found. If it is… well, it's new. I didn't want to use my old Jedi lightsaber anymore. I just built that one. The hilt design won't have been recorded anywhere. I was wearing gloves tonight, so no fingerprints. And non-conductive gloves when I was assembling it, so no prints inside."
That was one worry down. "Good."
"But Jag lost his blaster at the same time-"
Jaina waved that one away. "Also not a problem. That model is custom-built for him. Big enough for him to hold with his gauntlets on. Unless he throws a switch, if it's separated from him for more than a certain number of seconds, it blows up."
"That's strange," Tahiri decided. "Your boyfriend's strange."
"I know."
Tahiri looked over to where Dab was sitting alone at a table, watching footage on his holoscreen, and finally stood. "I have to go."
"Tahiri, I don't think you ought to be out on the streets and walkways the way you're-"
"Let me know when he's gone forever," Tahiri said, and turned to bolt out of the dining hall.
Well. That would have gone better.
