Jaina's quarters- Jedi Temple- Wednesday night

So, today had sucked.

First Jaina had had to be part of a live interview for Javis Tyrr, admitting guilt in tracking down Seff Hellin and holding him in the Temple away from the GA, which wasn't really the hard part. The hard part was trying to be contrite about any of it, and to hold her tongue when her natural instinct was brutal honesty. Then after that public humiliation, it was back to the Jedi Temple, where the rest of her day was spent performing manual labor in the laundry and cafeteria as part of her punishment handed down by Kenth. And every time she started to think that wasn't fair, she had to remind herself that she'd known from the second she began Darkmeld that the consequences were all on her, and that she was just going to have to take her licks on this one.

Even if it was incredibly stupid.

By the time she was finally able to leave, all she wanted to do was go straight to bed. That plan was ditched when she opened the door to her quarters and saw Jag stretched out on the bed, waiting for her. Not dirty. The lights were dimmed, and he'd cleared off the table to arrange dinner- bought, not made, she knew- and he luckily didn't seem to be upset that she was back this late. She really didn't want to deal with some kind of stupid fight tonight.

"I've been swallowing my pride all day," she sighed. "I'm not hungry."

"Well, I am," Jag shrugged. "Do you know what time it is?"

That was probably the most domestic thing he'd ever said. "I've been a bit busy," Jaina said.

"I know. That's why I thought you might want something to eat. You tend to forget to fuel yourself when you're in full-on charge mode," he said, standing from the bed to come over to her, walk her towards a chair, sit her down, and start tugging off her boots. She was tired enough to let him. Sometimes, he could be pretty sweet.

"Come on. Eat something and tell me what happened," he said. "I saw the holonews, of course, but something tells me that Javis Tyrr might not be reporting the entire story."

Apparently bringing up that name was enough to get her to want to rant a little. So she told him the story over dinner, about getting caught, about the meeting with Daala, about the interview, and the rest of her day. It probably said something that the stampeding animals had not been the worst part of today. Jag didn't say anything, just listened and let her talk.

"I never mentioned you, Tahiri, Winter or Mirax," she assured him. "I was forced to reveal Tekli, but I honestly think that was a good thing. You know how agitated she can get. I think it was kind of a relief for her."

"I agree. And thank you," he said. "I knew you wouldn't."

She smiled a little, and reached across the table to take his hand.

Jag squeezed it in return, and said, "Everyone who matters knows exactly what the situation is. Up to and including Master Hamner. I'd go so far as to say even Daala understands, but it's contrary to what she wants and frankly what she believes to be a positive thing. Your actions helped the Jedi retain two very valuable study subjects, and that might be what solves the whole problem."

"Hey, you think my double could stand in for me here?" Jaina tried.

"She's good, but her mouth is all wrong. I don't think she'd fool a Jedi," Jag said, feigning seriousness.

Jaina actually laughed, which wasn't something she thought she'd be doing at all tonight, and she even got through dessert in a better mood.

Once that was finished, Jag reached for the bottle of wine he'd had on ice. "And now to celebrate."

"This day?" Jaina said, wrinkling her nose. "I think it needs to be buried, not celebrated."

"So far, I would agree with you. But I have something to suggest that will, I certainly hope, let this horrible day end on a very positive note."

He poured a glass for each of them, but even as Jaina accepted hers, she was mostly just confused. "This better not be about the Moffs, the GA, or the Empire," she warned.

"Well, then, I must disappoint. Because this is most assuredly about the Empire. Specifically about the head of said Empire and a joint venture he is suggesting. I think a formal alliance between two key factions would be a wise idea at this juncture. Both parties would benefit."

Yeeeeah, still confused. Jaina studied him, trying to figure out what he was talking about, but mostly all she saw was him trying to keep his expression even. "Have you been in negotiations with some world I've not heard about?" she asked. "Or are you trying to push that whole rival Jedi school thing on me again?"

Jag blinked, and slowly started to smile. "Jaina Solo, I'm asking you to marry me."

Of all the things she'd considered he was trying to say, that was not it. "I- what- you- how would this possibly work?"

There had probably been better answers to marriage proposals.

He must have considered the logistics and political questions too, because he was prepared. Of course he was. "You'll continue exactly as you have, of course... and so will I. Eventually I'm certain the Jedi will determine exactly what's going on with Valin, Jysella and the others. Once a treatment is found, Daala will be severely defanged. Luke will still be gone, but this whole grotesque sideshow will be over. I am also certain that Luke will return sooner rather than later with enough information on what happened with Jacen to get his sentence overturned. Once he accomplishes that, public sentiment will swing back towards the Jedi. As for the Moffs, they may think I'm a fool for love, but I actually have some very solid leads on who the troublemakers behind the scenes are."

And with the practical stuff out of the way, he leaned forward, very serious. "Jaina, I love you for who you are. I have for a long time. I have absolutely no desire to curtail, impede, cripple, modify, or thwart you in any way. There is my detailed argument for this formal union. What do you think of the proposition?"

The thing was, it wasn't that Jaina hadn't known this was coming. At least, she'd known it was coming at some point soon, thanks to seeing various futures in Fandom and knowing that she'd already married Jag in Ben's reality. She simply just hadn't thought about it because their situation had been something less than ideal. Never once had she thought anything like "but when…?" Also, she'd been kind of busy with other things lately.

And when she was able to process through the shock, she was mostly left with the thought that her boyfriend, who was watching her intently and actually was looking nervous for once in his life, was a dork.

Which led to the question of whether he was actually her boyfriend anymore.

She didn't even need to think about her answer, actually, and when she got up to go to him, she moved so fast and so enthusiastically that she knocked the chair over.

As answers went, that was much better.
