Kashyyyk, Sunday evening Fandom time
It was getting kind of scary, how Jaina had a reason to worry about everyone in her family. Chewbacca's memorial had been hard for all of them, but some showed it more than others. Anakin still had guilt over leaving him behind on Sernpidal, and Han really didn't seem to know what to do with himself, and Jaina didn't know how those things affected everything else. She just knew that they did.
Lowbacca was still hanging around her. Not that she minded. She felt in a lot of ways like she'd grown up with Lowie. He'd tried to take on Chewie's life debt to the Solo family, which Han had had a real problem with, but Jaina knew it wouldn't stop her friend at all. It just looked like he was going to focus on her and her brothers. She'd insisted that she was fine to return to Fandom, and nothing was going to go wrong, and no, he couldn't come along.
It wasn't until Jaina was mostly packed that she heard the knock on the doorway of what had been designated the kids' room that Lowie left, and that was just because Leia had asked him to. "Are you all ready?" she asked, stepping inside.
Jaina nodded. "More or less. I've got a couple of things to cram in, but I'll get out on time."
"I wouldn't mind if you missed the shuttle," Leia admitted with a little smile, which Jaina matched. "How are you doing?"
"With this?" she asked, and shrugged. "I won't lie. It's hard. But it happened, and at least we got some sort of goodbye. That's more than a lot of people get." She wouldn't be able to say goodbye to Anni, for instance. "How are you?"
"Don't worry about me," Leia said, waving it off. "I'm the last person anyone needs to worry about."
Jaina looked down at her bag for a moment. "Dad's not doing well, is he?"
"Chewie was a major part of his life," said Leia, not exactly answering the question. "He's handling things the way he needs to handle them."
"I just wish he wasn't so hard on Anakin," she said, frowning.
Leia didn't even need to say she agreed on that point. She and Han were probably arguing that a lot, really. "He'll get over it in his own time. Hopefully sooner than later." And then, probably figuring this wasn't the most comfortable topic for Jaina, asked, "When do you think you'll be back?"
"I'm not sure yet," Jaina said. "Probably for my next break. Not that I know when that is yet, but hopefully not too far away. I feel like I'm missing a lot."
Her mother shook her head. "You're doing what you need to do. And you've done a wonderful job in Rogue Squadron. Don't think you're doing any less than you should be."
Jaina didn't always get along with her mother. She loved her dearly, but they had their issues, especially as Jaina got older. However, things like that made her love her mom more than ever.
And when she stepped on the transport later to head back to Fandom, she felt that much less guilty about it.
