Room 313, Monday morning

After being dropped off by the transport, Jaina headed back to the dorms and to her room. Given what she'd heard about time passing differently outside of Fandom sometimes, she wasn't sure how long she'd been gone by this town's time, but she really hoped it hadn't been so long that she wasn't supposed to be in this room anymore.

Well, if she wasn't... too bad. She opened the door, dumped her things at the foot of her bed, and crawled onto it to relax.

Inara rolled over on her side and blinked sleepily at Jaina, then smiled. "You're back." She wasn't at her most alert in the morning, no. "Did you enjoy your trip home?"

"Parts of it," Jaina answered with a little smile. Good, she can't have been gone too long. "Have I missed much?"

"About a week, I think?" Inara tried to think of what had happened the week before, "A group of new students arrived, but other than that, it was reasonably quiet."

"Great, more names to-" She frowned, looking back over at her. "Only a week? Seriously?"

"Maybe a little longer, but not much," she shrugged and pulled the sheet around her, "Why? How long did you think you were gone?"

"I just had nearly three months out there," she says. "I thought I'd missed the entirety of second session."

"Three months?" Inara asked, surprised, "No. It definitely hasn't been that long."

"Good," she says. "It saves me the trouble of having to explain to the administrators why I'm not registered then. So you haven't been up to anything while I was gone?"

"I had another date with Gavin," she blushed, feeling a little strange discussing this.

Right. Gavin was still here, and not older. That was going to take some getting used to yet again. "Oh. Um. How's that going?"

So weird.

"Well, I think," she said, "Did you get the chance to see your family?"

[solo_sword]

"Yeah," she said, sitting up and crossing her legs under her. "Not all the time, but enough that I didn't spend all my time missing them. I joined the military."

Inara sat up, too, not caring in the least that she was all touseled. "Why?"

"They need people. I'm good enough to join, and everyone else in my family is doing something," Jaina explained. "I do like it. I'm not sure if they'll need to replace me before the next time I go back, though."

"So, what will you be doing?"

[solo_sword]

"Staying here," she said, shrugging. "I'll be going to school and learning what I can here, and when I go home next time, now I know I have time to do things to help while I'm there."

"No, I mean, what will you be doing for the military?"

"Oh! I'm actually flying with Rogue Squadron," she answered. "I'm a lieutenant now."

"Congratulations!" Inara decided that that was the correct answer. "Do you like being a lieutenant?"

"I do." No way was Jaina unable to smile when she said that. "I've always respected the squadron, and I've learned so much from them. And I like knowing I'm doing something worthwhile. I love it."

"So...why did you come back?"

[solo_sword]

"I still have things to learn here," she shrugged. "And a few people I can learn from because different versions of them exist where I come from. That's the weirdest reasoning, I know."

"I guess I have a different version of someone here that I will know as well, but I don't know what I can learn from her," Inara said, "but I can see how learning things here could be more important."
