Jaina wasn't really up on waiting around for her family in order to the leave the banquet she was too busy avoiding everyone at, so she and John made their escape early, when no one was looking to block the door all "Leaving so soon?"

So now it was just a matter of walking back to the apartment, trying to act like nothing was wrong when everyone'd spent the night reminding her of what was wrong.

The change was nearly palpable, but there was no way he was saying anything first. He'd done that before. "So, your people aren't very good at the whole party thing, huh?"

"Lando throws better ones," she answered easily. "The political ones are always boring, unless you're there long enough for the old Rogues to get really drunk."

"I'd settle for edible hors d'oeuvres," John replied. "Maybe danceable music." He spun once as he walked along.

Jaina gave him a little lopsided smile in response. "I think they would have had a field day with us dancing."

"What? Like anyone was paying any attention to us," John scoffed.

"I highly doubt that," she said, and it was up to interpretation whether she sounded more wry or bitter.

"Okay, like anyone was paying attention to me," he smiled.

"I was," she protested. You know, when she wasn't hiding at the back of the room trying not to be seen.

"Oh? And what was I doing?" John teased.

"Being yourself," she replied, having no actual idea.

He laughed. "Okay then."

"Sorry, I was a little distracted," she admitted, with a note of apology in there.

"You're allowed," he shrugged, not that he wasn't wondering, he just wasn't asking.

She wasn't really up to talking about it, but she had to know whether there was a Conversation that was going to happen. "No one talked to you about me, did they?"

John raised an eyebrow. "Should they have?"

"No. Just wondering. I had to talk to a lot of people."

Had to did not mean the same as did. Because Jacen was the only one who got that much.

"Guess that's what comes with being one of the honorees," he pointed out.

"Yeah, maybe now this means people will start finally taking us seriously and sending us out on all the dangerous missions," she deadpanned. "The whole thing was pointless." Well, okay, not entirely.

John had kind of expected that. "Tell me how you really feel."

"That was pretty much it, right there," she nodded. "I get why, but that doesn't mean it's not stupid."

"And I take it stupid is why we're the only ones headed for the apartment now?"

Jaina took a second to answer that. "Yeah, pretty much," she decided. "I just didn't want to be social anymore."

"Then I will make sure I'm very antisocial for you." He was trying to amuse.

She bumped into him lightly as they walked. "Does that mean we're going to stand at opposite corners of the apartment?"

"That would last for all of five minutes," he remarked.

She looked up at him and asked, "You think?" Maybe she just wanted confirmation of that, considering how off she was feeling.

"You're not gonna make this a challenge, are you?" Because he might have a tantrum.

"I'm not up for giving you a tough time tonight," she admitted. "No challenge there from me."

"While that's a relief," he reached his arm around her to settle on her shoulders, "It almost makes me worry a little."

She slipped her arm around his waist, kind of liking the closeness. "Nah. Go with the relief thing."

"If you say so," he told her, rubbing his hand over her shoulder.
