Room 527, Tuesday morning

Jaina woke to a few thoughts in her head even in those first few seconds when you rightfully shouldn't be able to think of anything:

1. She had to get up and make her usual checkup calls back home and see what she'd been sent overnight.
2. She had class to go to.
3. She had enough time that she could spend a little while longer snuggled up to her boyfriend, all warm and comfortable.

Focusing on the third option for now, she slung her arm over him, pulling herself closer just because she could.

"You don't pick fights with me..."

"Yes, I have. Ours just tend to go in other directions," Jaina said. "Besides, you wouldn't want to see me doing that when I was as messed up as I was on Hapes." She was going to have to kill herself later. She just was.

"Let me get this straight," John said. "Back when you were avoiding calling me to break up with me, you were flirting with other guys in such a way that even months later when I was on the god damned base they thought you were interested?" The hurt in his chest was feeling severe.

"I wasn't trying to flirt with him!" Jaina insisted, not liking how this was going. "I was destructive, and it was fun to knock him down because he was always so calm about everything, and I needed to knock down everything then. He wasn't in on what my motivations really were."

"See, it's finding out stuff like this way after the fact that hurts," John told her, shaking his head. "How would you like it if I told you some girl was all over me while you were gone and I was debating never seeing you again?"

"I'd beat you both," she replied. "But that's not what happened. What I was doing to him is not something you'd want done to you."

"Whatever, Jaina," he sighed, and normally he would leave it at that, but the truth was pouring forth. "Shit from the summer isn't worth it. Why did you have to say anything?"

"You started bringing up other guys. It was the worst summer I'm likely to ever have, whether I live to nineteen or nine hundred, and it has nothing to do with anyone who may have had a crush on me." She would have stopped there, but she kind of couldn't right now. "And I can't take that you're turning it into this."

"Finally, you come around to agree with me that everything I do turns into a mess. Took you a year and a half longer than expected but I apologize for the delay."

"I didn't say that! And I don't think that. Being upset about something you say doesn't mean you're turning everything into a mess, cut that out."

"You said it was my fault, I owned up to it and you throw that in my face, what do you want me to do? Beg? I think we both know I would, as pathetic as that is."

"Sometimes I think you try to drive me away," Jaina sighed. "And then I think you greatly underestimate my tenacity."

"That's because I do," John groaned, wishing he had a pillow to smother himself with.

"Too bad, it's not working," she said stubbornly. "This had better not be because you think I'm too good for you."

"That and you'd be better off without me screwing things up but I think we visited that once and I'm so sick of all our problems being about me, don't you ever do anything wrong?"

"I'm kind of a bitch," she answered. Hey.

"Yeah, but that's part of your hotness," he said dismissively.

"And I'm self-entitled, pessimistic, no fun to deal with, and probably should have pushed you away when everything went to hell but I was selfish and wanted keep you around even when I thought I'd hurt you eventually." Jaina hated today.

"And yet, all of your faults just make you that much more attractive because I like going after things that others would consider dangerous or bad for my well-being." John would be avoiding a lot after this.

She was doing a lot of frowning today. If tomorrow she ended up with a new line between her eyebrows, this conversation was why. "Do you think I'm bad for your well-being?"

"No!" He shook his head emphatically. "But your lifestyle makes you a risk because anytime you go home I know there's a chance you won't come back."

"But you go back with me..." she said, not entirely getting it.

He shrugged, "I don't know! No one ever said my idiot brain had to make any damned sense, did they? This would be so much easier if I could sew my big mouth shut here."

"You're not an idiot. And I hate today. A lot."

"It sucks," he agreed. "I'm sorry I had to bother you with all that, the last thing you need on your plate is this mess of stuff that was never important enough to talk about before."
