Room 313, Wednesday afternoon

All right, fine, Jaina may have been sulking a bit. She hadn't had time to find something to distract her between leaving John and Colorado and getting back to the dorms, which meant too much time thinking. There'd been plenty of goodbyes lately, but having the person who'd pretty much gotten you through the last year, what, 3000 miles away? It was different.

Worse still was that this was the first time in a long time she hadn't just gone up to John's room after a trip, so she almost bypassed the third floor entirely, which was just going to make her feel like an idiot for a while. And when she got to her room and started to unpack, she set up her comlink to play her messages so she could multitask.

And she found a few she wasn't really expecting.

Frowning, she decided unpacking could wait a bit, and called him back. She hadn't even heard her comlink go off.

"That would be a little sad," she smiled. "How about 'everything within reason'?"

"You've got it," he agreed. "Now that that's all settled, I guess I should let you go." Not that he wanted to. At all.

"Wait," she said quickly. "I'm going to ask you to promise me something first."

"What's that?" John asked, fully curious.

[solo_sword]

"I'm good here," Jaina said. "I'm not going to hit the same issues. So if you start having doubts, I want to know. Like if this is too much, we can talk it through. And if some other girl starts looking really good, I can come there and prove why that is just a bad idea."

It kind of terrified her just how badly she wanted to make this work, and without hesitation. She was actually asking to talk now.

"That's good to know," he told her, glad to hear it. "And do me a favor and remind all the guys likely to start sniffing around that I'll be back for Homecoming, okay?"

"I'll make an announcement on radio next week," she smiled. Because she couldn't say they wouldn't be sniffing around anymore, only that she wouldn't be reciprocating.

"You know I can get the podcasts, right?" This was his way of saying he'd be listening, yes.

"Dammit. Now I have to watch what I say about you."

"That's right," he agreed. "Try not to kill Brooke while you're at it."

If he only knew. "I'll try my best," she said. "I'll be calling back later. No idea what time it'll be for you, but we'll see."

"Okay, one more thing before I go - I love you." He'd failed at the airport, he wouldn't now.

"I know you do," she replied, though she was really glad to hear it now. "I love you too."
