Room 313, Thursday afternoon

Jaina didn't emo. She could be sad, and contemplative if she really had to be, but she didn't dwell on things enough to be emo. Things she didn't want to deal with were repressed, problems she had to deal with were dealt with, and that was that. The current time situation with John was a problem, and one she was determined to get around. She couldn't fix it, but she could work with it.

She thought that maybe Leia might be relieved that her daughter had finally actually started working at a relationship she wanted to keep when threatened after a year of trying to convince her that that wasn't so scary. Then she realized Leia'd probably assumed Jaina would figure that out in her own time. Her mom was kind of awesome that way.

One of the steps to working around her problem was getting an iPhone. No, seriously. While for some reason this made her feel a little strange, since in all this time she hadn't really needed to buy into Earth tech (because it was primitive), it meant she could figure out when and where she was whenever she needed to. She'd be bouncing back and forth between here, home, and wherever and whenever John was; she was going to need that. Plus it meant she could access E-mail no matter where she was, though souping this thing up to make sure that could actually happen was out of her expertise. She found herself wishing her brother Anakin was around to do that, but she instead buried that thought and told herself instead that Lowie should be able to do that for her when she went home next.

For the moment, she was sitting on her bed- now with new and improved bedding- playing with the phone and trying to figure it out, as instruction books were for those without aptitude between receiving and making some calls.

Tahiri had been meaning to come by and check in -- not that she'd refer to it as such in front of Jaina -- anyway, but after last night's radio she'd bumped that up her priority list. To all appearances Jaina handled these things much better than she did, yes, but that didn't mean Tahiri was going to let her go through a rough time alone if she could help it. Yes, even after the way Jaina'd reacted to her attempts after John had gotten attacked by the zombies.

This was Anakin's sister, and Tahiri was stubborn. So sue her.

She knocked on the doorframe, peering in. "Hey."

Jaina looked up, a little surprised to see her there. "Hey," she said, waving her in slightly with her phone hand. "Something up?"

"Just thought I'd say hi." Not the entire truth, of course, but. Tahiri shrugged, eyeing the phone as she edged in and leaned against the wall. "New toy?"

"That's a good word for it," said Jaina, frowning at it. "People spent a lot of time on really pointless applications. These things are the death of productivity, I'm pretty sure."

And yet she sort of loved it for the things she'd use it for. Shhh.

"I'd have thought Earth tech was too primitive for you." Tahiri hid a small grin at the look on Jaina's face. "But that's pretty impressively compact, all things considered. What is it, anyway?"

"It's called an iPhone," she said, holding it out for inspection. She wasn't too attached to it yet. "I need the GPS, I need the calendar, I need Lowie to make sure I have portable E-mail. Oh, and the video might come in handy here." That was John's influence and Lois' absence speaking.

Tahiri drifted closer to peer at the phone, but didn't take it -- thanks, Riina. "In that case, remind me to schedule my next gremlin bite for sometime you're not here," she said, a bit of a joke to lead into what she had to say next. "I heard about the time thing last night. Like it wasn't confusing enough."

"I think it's August there now," she said with a shrug. She wondered if there was an app for keeping track of that. Wow, that was sad. "It's okay. It's an organizational mess, if nothing else, but it's okay."

There probably was an app, or if not someone was going to make it soon. "Because you didn't have enough things to keep track of." Tahiri glanced at Jaina briefly, like she didn't believe it was really that okay. "It's weird, not having you next door any more."

She almost sounded like she missed it. She might. Shh.

"I'm sure you get more sleep now." She figured once someone'd knocked on your door to interrupt dirty time, it was okay to say that to them.

She was still embarrassed about that, thus Tahiri's face going a bit red. She laughed uneasily and admitted, "Yeah, because I was getting so much of it to begin with."

Jaina raised her eyebrows, asking, "Problems?"

"Bad dreams," Tahiri said as casually as she could, trying to shrug it off. "It comes and goes. I'll deal."

But that was a downer kind of conversation, which was kind of what she was trying to avoid. She poked a finger experimentally at the iPhone; as Earth tech went, it was pretty neat. "How is it almost time for new kids again?"

She paused, part of her wanting to ask about the dreams, since she was having some herself and she couldn't help wondering if it was for the same reason. But that would mean admitting she was having them.

"Summer's fast like that," she said instead. "Shorter time to begin with, cut it in half, and you get twice the trauma."

And of course, if Jaina admitted she was having those dreams, Tahiri would be all over trying to find out why. Quite possibly, nobody wanted that, so good thing it was a moot point.

"That better only be metaphorical this time around," Tahiri said ~~futilely~~, making a face. "But then, we lucked out that way last time."

"That's not comforting. I'm preparing myself for more this time. You know, I thought I missed out on this part. That's just not fair," she complained.

Tahiri laughed. She couldn't help it; there was something about Jaina complaining that was comforting somehow. She sobered fairly quickly when she realized what Jaina meant. "Well, better to be prepared, I suppose. And at least now you won't have people asking you why you got shorter?"

Jaina frowned at her. "I'd never actually heard that, you know." Amazingly.

"Really?" Tahiri blinked. "Not even once? I thought someone'd be dumb enough to say it."

"Maybe everyone just had an ounce of self-preservation. Well... John might have said it, but he doesn't have that anyway and it was too long ago to remember," she said slowly.

Tahiri bit her lip. "How's he doing?"

What she really meant was "How are you two doing," but that, for once, seemed like a bad idea.

"Last I heard, hungover, but it's been a bit since the last message so I'm guessing that's not true anymore," Jaina shrugged. "I've been getting a lot of updates so far, but he seems to be doing pretty good. I'm planning on visiting, maybe in conjunction with my next trip home. I'm not sure yet."

"Good," Tahiri said with what might have been surprising emphasis; she'd been a little worried about what would happen between them after John left but hadn't exactly wanted to ask. "Good. Do you know when you're going home again?"

A pause, then hesitantly, "How's, um, the other me doing, do you know?"

"Soon. Probably in the next week or so. I'm trying to figure out where everyone is to coordinate, without first getting caught up in some operation while checking up on my pilots," she explained. That could happen after.

"I'm not getting a lot of updates on the other you. Every now and then there's something from Jacen." That... seemed wrong somehow now. She'd deal with that later. "I'm hoping to get to see her when I get there. At least to check in."

"I'm sure she'd appreciate it," Tahiri said with a tiny smile that would have been a little bigger except for how that had seemed wrong to her too. Sithspit, she'd forgotten how Ben had told Jaina everything; well, she was grateful this conversation wasn't more awkward, now. "So, just enough time to get used to your new class schedule, then off again? Sometimes I'm glad I'm nowhere near as important as you."

People kept using that word. Jaina personally would just use 'busy.' "I try to schedule my classes over one or two consecutive days in the week for a reason," she admitted. "It's easier to bounce around, and now I'll now what day it is for once when I get back."

She was a Solo. "Important" kind of went with the territory if you asked Tahiri.

"Thanks to the new toy." Tahiri managed a grin now. "Let me guess, you haven't even touched the manual."

"It's around somewhere," said Jaina. "It's easy. What do I need that for?"

"Possibly," Tahiri suggested wryly, "for throwing at a gremlin."

She raised a warning finger. "That," she said, "is not funny."

Not funny at all; ignore that look on Tahiri's face that looked vaguely like a smirk. "You could throw it at me for saying that, then?"

Jaina looked over the side of her bed for the bag, which she couldn't see. "When I find it."

Tahiri laughed. "Maybe that's my cue to leave."

"Might be." Since Jaina was now leaning over her bed to see under it.

"Am I going to have to look out for flying manuals next time I drop by, then?" Not that Tahiri was heading for the door yet.

"We'll see. Maybe I'll forgive you by then."

Seriously, with everything going on, with almost getting broken up with yesterday, with all the stuff looming over her head, Jaina should not have been teasing. And yet.

And yeah, getting teased by Jaina was weird. Not bad. Just weird.

"What if I get bored and come back to bug you in a few hours?"

Oh, now she was just being a brat.

"The door should be safely locked by then," Jaina promised. It probably wouldn't, though by then she probably would have torn herself away from staring at apps to catch up on more work.

"I needed practice working locks anyway." Like she'd actually do that to Jaina. Now Tahiri did start heading for the door. Just in case Jaina found that manual.

"Be glad there's two floors separating us again," she warned. Totally didn't mean it.

"Turning cartwheels with joy, see?" Tahiri called over her shoulder.
