Apartment in Palo Alto- Friday Fandom time

As much as Jaina didn't want to admit it, there was some weird time stuff going on in her galaxy, too, because Han and Leia managed to drag her on a forced vacation to Mon Calamari for days. They were still freaked out, enough that she'd gone without (too much) complaint. And she'd gone stir crazy being out there with nothing to do. Her parents had finally taken pity and given her leave, though they insisted that she take it easy and just take a break already. This after she told them about Hawaii. They hadn't believed her.

Since she hadn't been able to pinpoint when she'd get where she was going thanks to all the time weirdness, she got to the apartment on her own, opening the door with her key and hoping John was around.

In his room working, John called out when he heard the door open. "Hey, I talked to Dex and he's cool with meeting up before LLab to put it all together. You get the supplies?"

Repositioning her bag on her shoulder, Jaina leaned in the doorway. "Ooh, sorry, forgot them. I'll do better next time."

Turning at the sound of her voice, he smiled, "Please. If we're going to prank old paleface we've gotta get our acts together."

Jaina grinned. "I know. I fail. I was too excited to see you to remember?"

"I guess I can let it slide for now," he told her, shoving his books aside in a manner that insisted she join him on his bed. "You doing okay?"

"Yeah," she said, closing the door after stepping inside, and putting her bag down before climbing onto the bed. "Everyone else seems to be a lot less okay than I am somehow."

He reached out to give her a squeeze. "Should you not be okay?"

See, she immediately felt more normal just with that. "I'm not sure. I got captured by civilians," she frowned.

"And?" If he reacted before he knew the story, John was aware of the trouble he could put himself in.

Jaina sighed, scooting closer to him. "They had commandeered a battle station we needed when the battle went bad. We lost the HoloNet, we couldn't call for our backup," she explained. "I went aboard to see how they could help, thinking they were friendly, and then I got stunned and shackled and they pulled my pilots aboard to use parts from our X-wings to try and just leave the area. They were just going to leave everyone to die and they didn't even care. So I kind of... manipulated the leader into going back so he had to fight, and he didn't like me in his head much. By the time my parents got there to help, he was probably about to shoot me, which I think freaked them out."

She still didn't care so much about that part.

"Sounds like a typical day in your world," he replied, trying for funny to mask any worry he was feeling.

I was able to compare how bad the stun was to other times. I don't even blink at having blasters pulled on me anymore. I'm not sure how that happened." Which meant she agreed with him, yes.

When did he get cool with it? "It's your job. Even if it does mean getting kidnapped all the time."

"Not all the time!" Jaina protested. "Just... twice recently. And the last time was much worse."

"Okay, so what's the deal then?" He was still waiting for it.

"Besides the fact that I almost died?" Again, that part didn't bother her, which might have been part of what was bothering her in a way. "We can't really consider the battle a win because we lost just as much as we gained. And... I don't know, have you ever had just a string of things happen where you found out people's perceptions of you were wrong?"

It had apparently been a week for that. And that didn't even include turning into a boy, sad to say.

People's perceptions of John were usually pretty wrong, so he was kind of used to that. "What are people perceiving?"

"Well, Prann- the guy who held a blaster on me- seemed to think I have a type, and it's the suicide by battle type," she said. She was never really sure how freely she could talk about that with him, but she was trying. "And I know that's not the case now, but at the same time, I knew the Vong might pick me off trying to get to the station, which is why I did it instead of letting my pilots do it. And when the blaster was pointed at my head, I didn't even get nervous."

Or maybe this was just what happened when you really accepted the possibility of death and soldiered through anyway.

"You're not suicidal," he argued. "You knew the odds of getting through were better if you did it and that the jackass wasn't really going to shoot you or he would have before you were even aware that he was pointing the blaster on you."

It was possible he had a type and would defend it to the end of time.

"I know that," she said, though she maybe didn't really fully believe it till she actually heard someone say it. "Though in the case of Prann, I think I just knew that if that was how I was going go go out, at least it was for a good reason."

"And if you were really hoping to die in battle, I think you'd have done it already," he decided. Probably that time she didn't intend to tell him she wasn't coming back.

He was actually exactly right. "And maybe people are always going to think that about me because I can't make myself scale back what I do," she shrugged. "Which, by the way, on the direct opposite end of the spectrum, my grandfather thinks I give myself busy work to make myself feel involved."

She was maybe never getting over that.

Okay, now was probably not the time to think that made some sense. "I take it you didn't like that theory."

"I work too kriffing hard to pass it off like busy work, like it wouldn't matter if I did anything or not," she said. And considering how hard she did work, Anakin's comment just wasn't going to not sting.

"What's all this really about?" John wondered, maybe a little confused over where all this stuff was coming from. To him, it really was sudden given he'd not heard much of anything about work in a while.
