Room 313- Monday evening

Jaina's trip home had actually done her some good. At the very least, she was realizing she had things like work to distract her from her non-relationship and her non-relationship to distract her from work. Somewhat worryingly, she was beginning to think maybe she shouldn't be trying at this friend thing, because it was giving her plenty of reasons to be confused. Maybe that was why she'd only told three people so far; she wasn't sure enough of where things stood in her own head.

Right now she was going with the work distraction. She couldn't help it, there was something centering about working towards something big like this. Her desk was covered in pieces of flimsi as she went over data she'd brought back from home, checking it against reports she'd received this morning, and feeling better than she had in a while. There was something deeply wrong with this.

"Nothing to be sorry about. Sometimes things just won't work out," Jaina said, and she almost even sounded okay about it. Mainly due to the fact that she didn't know how not working out it was. Or something. Weirdest breakup ever.

Ben chewed on his lower lip for a long moment before he worked up the nerve to ask, "So I'm still okay to like him and stuff?"

"Definitely," she said immediately. "You're totally separate from that. And I was just talking to him this weekend, so I think it's safe for you to."

He looked relieved. "Because if you were asking me not to like Jag, I could jump right on that, but John is astral."

[solo_sword]

"Jag's not so bad," Jaina shrugged. "But just because I break up with somebody doesn't mean everyone else has to."

[momslilassassin]

"It's kind of my first experience with how this works," Ben said, blushing. "I don't know the rules."

[solo_sword]

"I'm kind of new to it, too." Which might be another reason there were totally unhealthy things going on here. "I don't think there are rules."

[momslilassassin]

"We should find out," Ben decided. "Maybe the library has something on it?"

Sigh, Ben.

"I've never been one for rulebooks," she said gently. "Some things shouldn't be put down like that."

[momslilassassin]

"I like rulebooks," Ben said. It explained why the GAG had appealed to him. "It means that I know how things are supposed to go. That way I can jump out of the way when things go to hell."

[solo_sword]

"Yeah, hopefully that won't be happening here," she told him.

[momslilassassin]

"So breakups don't end in a firefight?" Ben teased, a tiny smile on his face.

Given some of the exes in Luke's life that kept popping up, it wasn't an entirely unreasonable question.

[solo_sword]

"I know, I'm probably bucking some sort of tradition there," Jaina admitted. "John was the one who told me to flick you the other day, actually."

[momslilassassin]

"Well, I'd hit him back, but by the time I see him, he'll probably look like Yoda," Ben decided.

[solo_sword]

"Not that bad. He'll only be about forty come homecoming." Yeah.

Ben burst out giggling. "He'll be older than Granddad! Or close!"

[solo_sword]

That sort of thing didn't really get Jaina laughing. "Almost your dad's age in my time."

Ben didn't exactly have a peer group at home (came from shoddy writing skipping Jedi training at the praexeum) so age differences didn't really ping him in the same way.

"So he'll outrank you pretty soon, huh?" he asked.

[solo_sword]

"We'll see. When I talked to him he was just heading off for his last leg of training," she explained.

[momslilassassin]

"Where does that take him?" Ben replied.

[solo_sword]

"No idea. He might even be somewhere different today now," she said.

Ben wrinkled up his nose. "That's going to make it hard to send him a package."

[solo_sword]

"I have an address for him, if you want," Jaina offered.

Seriously. This was their breakup.

"Okay," Ben said happily. "I wasn't going to cook for him or anything. I like the guy."

[solo_sword]

She smiled. "I don't think it'd keep over the time difference anyway."

And then she paused. "Maybe that'd make it better."
