Room 313- Wednesday evening

The comlink project was turning out to be harder than Jaina had intended, but she was determined to get it done. Even if it meant getting Lowie on the comm to instruct her on how to do it. That was not going well. There was no mistaking the frustration in Jaina's voice, and while a bystander might not understand the growls and such coming from the other end of the line, there was frustration happening there, too.

"I have an idea," Jaina said finally, rubbing a temple. "Think you can get one set up from there and send it to me?"

Lowie grumbled his agreement at that, to which she replied good-naturedly, "Good Wookiee."

And yet as soon as the call was over Jaina was trying again, because again, determined.

Rose was bored and trying to find something way more interesting than her room.

"Are you-" Rose tilted her head trying to make sense of whatever was going on. "I don't even have words for whatever's going on. You're being all sciencey."

"I've decided I need a Wookiee roommate who can do all my computer work for me. I'm sure he'd do it if I asked," Jaina said, looking up from the comlink. "Hi."

"What's a wookiee?" Rose asked curiously. "And why are you building a computer? Can't you just buy one?"

"My friend Lowie's a Wookiee," she said, waving Rose in. "Huge, furry, speaks in what most people hear as growls. I'm trying to copy my comlink settings into this one, but it's turning out to be a little outside my skill set. He at least knows what he's doing here." She needed an Anakin Solo, but she didn't have one of those anymore.

"I wanna make a joke about your friend being a furry," she said, coming in and sitting at one of the desks. "But he probably actually is so it's not as funny."

"No, the funny thing is you're not the first person to make that comment," she told her with a bit of a grin. Yeah, of all the people Jaina knew, guess who else had been the one to say that. Just guess. "Maybe I should start expecting it now..."

"Am I the second at least?" she asked, grinning back. "Cause more than that, and I'm just sad." Hmmm, did he have crazy hair? "And yeah, probably. Especially if you happen to know smartasses."

Ding ding ding, correct guess! "You are the second, congratulations. Considering the amount of smartasses I do know, that's an accomplishment," she said. "So what are you up to tonight?"

"Excellent," Rose decided. "I don't feel like a loser then. I think I'm watching you build a commlink. Thing."

"More accurately, you're watching me fail at programming it," Jaina corrected. "Sorry if I just made it sound less thrilling."

"No, see that's way more interesting," Rose told her. "Cause now it's not like ...what the hell have I been doing while Jaina learned how to build a commlink thing."

"To be fair, I probably could have built one while you were in kindergarten," Jaina said. "It just wouldn't have worked." Like this one did.

"And now I'm feeling all behind again," she teased. "So is that one going to work eventually?"

Jaina looked at the comlink in hand, half uncovered so she could work on the interior. "This one? Maybe not. I gave instructions and am having Lowie send me one that does, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to keep trying on this." And realizing that sounded a little weird, added, "It's the principle of the thing now."

"Geek," Rose said lightly. "Don't let that little piece of metal beat you. What's it for?"

"It's what we use back home instead of phones," she explained. "Once I get one that's actually set up I'm sending one to John."

"Do they take pictures or play games?" she asked. "Cause otherwise they're not as good." Teasing, yes.

"No, that's why I have the iPhone," she said, lifting a hand to call that over from her desk. "This is superior, I'll give you that, but they don't come super encryped, either." Granted, hers was now, once again thanks to Lowie.

Also the whole floating things over was was cool. "And cause he's all military, the coded thing is better than normal phones?" she asked.

She nodded. "Right now his emails get read by people before they get to me, his mail passes through other people before he gets it..." She stopped herself from mentioning that it worked intergalactically. "None of my transmissions got intercepted in five years of wartime, I figure it's worth a shot trying it here."

"That'd be awesome," she agreed. "Cause, uh, yeah, it's crappy enough to have to be far away but having people butting into your business all the time? Screw it."

"We sort of have to talk in code, and I have to watch that what I say doesn't trigger any alarms for whoever's reading..." Plus it sucked when she thought something was going on, or if by some chance he wanted to talk about what was going on. "I don't think I don't work very well with a censor."

Rose frowned a little, hating the sound of that. "Censors are lame" was her oh-so-educated opinion. She glanced from the commlink back to Jaina. "And you can use yours to talk to your family and people at home now, right?"

"Uh huh. As long as they're somewhere they can be reached, anyway," she added. "My parents fall off the radar when they're trying not to be found by bad guys. It happens more than you'd think."

Rose nodded, not wanting to say the whole obvious conclusion of 'so when/if you have to go home, you'll get to keep in touch.' "I believe it," she said, thinking of her mother and rolling her eyes a little. "They always gotta be on duty and stuff?"

"Not always anymore. Used to be they just ended up in the middle of bad situations whether they meant to be there or not, but since the war's over they're actually in one place and available," she said, and that was still a little weird for her. "Far cry from the old days, and I'm sure it won't stick."

"Yeah, I honestly can't decide if your parents are awesome or insane," she said.

"Both," she said immediately, and honestly. "At least it's the fun kind of insane? Till people start shooting?"

"Fair enough," Rose said easily. "And I want some of the insane ones on my side when the shooting starts."

Jaina frowned, thinking about this. "I know a lot of them. They're called Wraiths. I can spare some, should you ever need them."

"You're going to send me a bunch of ghosts?" Rose asked. "No way, I don't do ghosts until next week."

"Would you rather space aliens? Pilots. I'm sure I could even still get away with bossing some of them around," she mused. "Tahiri can back me up on the insanity."

"They're less crazy at least? Cute pilots?" It was an important question. Even if they were crazy.

"Some of them might be considered attractive, depending on your species preference," she said diplomatically. The Gammorrean was a real looker.

"No then," Rose concluded. Her species preference might be wider than a normal humans what with the dhampir and Moroi tossed in, but - yeah.

"They don't look like our guys, let's put it that way." The Wraiths weren't trolls or anything, but Jaina would admit her bias.

"I'll just like 'em for the crazy then," she decided. "Were they your people during the war?"

"'My people?'" Jaina repeated with a little smile. "I worked with them some. I had a couple follow me around for goddess training, for the most part. That was more about the psychological warfare, less on blowing things up."

"It's vaguely annoying I can't even mock you about throwing around the term 'goddess training' like that," Rose teased. "Were they doing the training or being the worshippers?"

"My alter ego could have had you destroyed for mocking anyway," she teased back. "They did the training, while getting to call me Great One and doing all my dirty work for me for show. That part got really old really fast."

Rose snickered. "Yes, it must have been terrible. Really. My heart bleeds."

"It was nice for a couple days, and it got me my job back, and then it became a hassle to not be able to go and see anyone directly, but to call Piggy and have him bring them to me so I could tell them something," Jaina said. "Not fun. Annoying."
