Room 313, Friday evening

Jaina still felt like she should be doing something, but she was trying so hard not to go off and do something stupid anyway. Logically she knew trying to do something like knock an angel's head off was probably only going to get her into trouble, but... but...

So this was her cleaning her side of the room that didn't need cleaning because she was trying to keep herself busy while being good.

She moved up to sit at the edge of the bed and said, "I don't think that. At all. You handled yourself fine when you went off with Rikku, didn't you? But forgive me if I don't want to lose you to something completely preventable."

He rubbed his face with one hand, vowing never to tell her about exactly how often he'd needed healing on Spira. "I hate to break it to you, but you're not gonna lose me to some stupid statues."

"All I'm asking is that you don't tempt fate," Jaina said. So far she'd been able to stay nicely detached from the actual situation, but if she started losing people- especially him- she knew how she'd react.

John exhaled, dropping his arms to his sides. "Fine. No tempting of anything, especially fate. Happy now?"

She probably even looked relieved. "Thank you."

He was a little surprised to be thanked. He stepped closer to the bed. "Are you okay?"

"Now I am," she said with a little sigh.

Unsure why that made him feel guilty, he reached out to wrap his arms around her in response.

Surprised by that, she stood, wrapping her arms around him. "It's okay," she assured him.

Despite knowing it would affect her, some part of him wished he was stuck in the past instead of his friends.

"I don't want to upset you," he told her, hand smoothing over her back.

"You're not," she said, because otherwise she'd have to admit being upset. Even if it did mean she had to admit something else. "I'm just sick of losing people, I don't want to have to do it here, too."

"Yeah." That only reminded him that he really ought to think more before he did stupid things or accused her of thinking him incapable. "I miss Mexico," he said, trying to lighten things a little.

"We should have hijacked the bus," she decided.

"I bet it would've been a popular hijacking even," he agreed.

"In fact there probably wouldn't have been any opposition."

"We would've had enthusiastic assistance from the students," he added.

She considered this. "And teachers."

"So true, we don't want to forget them."

She lightly rubbed her hand over his back. "Could always focus on the good stuff when this is over. Maybe Mexico part two."

"I like that idea," he agreed. "We should go somewhere."

She liked that idea herself. "Where are you thinking?"

"Anyplace you've wanted to go?" he asked. "You're the one who's newish."

"I'm still learning the geography," she said. "I know the surrounding areas here, where we were in Mexico, and Boston. My range is a little limited." She thought about it, and said, "I doubt there's anything like Mexico around here, huh?"

"If you mean the climate, not really," he said, trying to think of places. "But there are resorts."

"That's a possibility," she nodded. "Might be worth doing a little research."
