Room 313, Wednesday night

Long after fencing club, Jaina was in her room, dressed for bed but not ready to attempt sleep. She was still not really wanting to think about certain things, and feeling pretty antisocial to boot, which she wanted to stop already. Her usual method of coping was not to cope, and that didn't work so well when you'd had to tell the story several times already.

Figuring she wouldn't sleep well if she tried yet anyway, she grabbed her comlink from her desk, debating whether calling home would help or not.

"Physically only a couple of months," Jaina pointed out. And she sort of realized she might have another birthday coming up soonish, too.

"And won't you have another birthday sometime soon? What with your time moving so fast?"

"Shh, my little brother's going to pass me in age in a couple months. I'm trying to repress," she said.

"Aww," he patted her hand, "It's a good thing I've already got presents to make that transition easier."

"Tell me you're not serious," she said, looking over at him.

"Completely. I'm prepared." He was, and he was grinning about it.

"How are you prepared?" she wondered. "I didn't even think about it till now."

"I made a purchase a month or so ago," he explained. "Technically not intended for a birthday, but it's something."

"What is it?" Psh, patience.

"You'll see." Not that she wanted to.

"That's not the answer I wanted to hear," she informed him.

"And somehow it's the answer you got."

"What are the odds of getting a different one?"

"That'll depend on whether or not you find it in my room," John said. "'Cause I'm not talking."

"That sounds like permission to search."

"You don't even know what you're looking for," John reminded her.

"Your point?"

John sighed, she really was stubborn. "Fine, search your heart out, but I get to be there and you have to clean up after yourself."

She kind of couldn't believe she managed that. She hadn't even been really serious, but if the opportunity was there... "Deal," she agreed.

"And no fair getting mad about anything else you find," John added.

Jaina paused. "What else might I find?"

"Everything in my room," John replied.

"You're funny," she told him lightly.

"I try," he smiled. "But seriously, I don't have anything really scary except the occasional embarrassing DVD." Because he'd be getting rid of anything dirty ASAP.

Sadly, or maybe luckily, Jaina didn't jump to that conclusion. "Just don't tell me you have that one that was supposed to be the flying movie."
