Coruscant- late Friday Fandom time
The boys had been acting twelve at each other before, but with Eric visiting, that seemed to kick them into overdrive. Once Jag was done wtf'ing over the fact that Jaina hung out with vampires now, it hadn't been hard to talk him into maybe getting some assistance in hunting a Dark Jedi with memory-erasing powers from a hardcore predator with a thousand years of experience, even temporarily. And, to be honest, if Jag and Zekk were going to be sniping at each other, Jaina liked having someone normal around so she was less tempted to pop one or both of them for annoying her.
But right at this moment, Eric should only just be waking up soon, and rather than watching Zekk and Jag glare at each other, she'd invited Zekk for some one-on-one sparring. It made things easier for her, dealing with just one of them at a time, though she maybe hadn't realized she was exacerbating the problem she was trying to avoid by doing that. Oops.
The spar was relaxed enough to talk in between swings, which meant Zekk could easily say, "I think you're taking the whole 'Sword of the Jedi' thing too seriously."
Just for that, Jaina made sure she got a lucky shot in with her practice lightsaber. "I'm not taking the Sword of the Jedi designation too seriously. How can I, when I don't even know what it means? Not even Uncle Luke really knows what it means. He's never been entirely sure why he said it. Maybe it was the Force speaking through him."
Zekk readied his practice saber again. "Maybe it means you're the new Chosen One."
Jaina shuddered, then went on guard. "I hope not. It took my grandfather decades, multiple amputations, and a lot of tragedy to achieve his destiny." Though, to be honest, she was sure at least some of that might be true for herself. She struck again. "Besides, there's no Emperor for me to hurl down a well."
"There's Lumiya."
Neither Jaina nor Zekk had realized anyone had arrived until their visitor said that, and they both stopped the duel to turn to Jag, sitting on the mat, just watching them. "I wish he wouldn't spy on us," Zekk complained in a murmur.
Jaina ignored him and deactivated her lightsaber. "What about Lumiya?"
Jag shrugged. "The Chosen One destroyed the leader of the Sith. Lumiya's Sith, correct?"
Zekk deactivated his own blade. "She's what's left of the Sith. I doubt that it will take someone who fills a once-in-a-generation prophetic role, if that's what the Sword is, to eliminate her."
"I've tangled with Sith before. It's not the easiest thing in the galaxy," Jaina pointed out. And one of those times had been a version of Jacen. One who hadn't seemed far from who her Jacen was becoming now, and he'd kicked her ass and put her in the clinic. Not that that scared her. Really.
Both men just looked at her.
"Fandom?" Jag guessed finally.
"I keep telling you people, that place is weird. You should really start believing me," she said.
He nodded his acceptance of this, and continued, "I'll admit I don't have enough knowledge of the Jedi even to speculate in an informed manner..."
"Good for you," Zekk replied.
Jag just grinned at that. "But I look at it this way. A sword is a weapon. A weapon of the Jedi would be used by the will of, or against the enemy of, the Jedi. The enemy of the Jedi are the Sith and other anti-Jedi, whatever they choose to call themselves. The Sword of the Jedi would therefore be someone who is wielded against the Sith. So is that simple, simplistic, or just wrong?"
"I vote for simplistic." Zekk returned his attention to Jaina. "Another round?"
For as nervous as the Sith topic made her, there was something really interesting in Jag's words. Namely, he was on to what she'd already been thinking. "I want to hear this," she said. "I could use the perspective of someone outside the order. And Jag always has an interesting perspective."
Zekk sighed like this was some huge chore, and he held out his hand to take Jaina's saber and put it away.
Jag meanwhile looked slightly apologetic. "I'm not sure I have a perspective other than what I just said. But I can speculate."
"Please." This was punctuated by her sitting on the mat in front of him, her legs tucked under her, mirroring his pose.
"I'm no more suited to analyze the Force than I am to composing ultrasonic music, since I can't experience either. I just know the little bits I've heard, and that's been added to quite a lot since I've come here," Jag warned. "But if the Force was speaking through the Grand Master when he pronounced you the Sword of the Jedi, and if the Sword is anything like a Chosen One, then there's some sort of imbalance that needs to be addressed. And that would seem to point to Lumiya."
Jaina nodded. She'd thought for years that being Sword of the Jedi ultimately meant taking out Jacen, and so till she'd been assigned this, she'd stayed entirely focused on that. But maybe if they got rid of Lumiya and her influence, Jacen could still be saved. Her grandfather had said outright to kill her. It might not be too late yet. "Maybe our task force needs to be pursuing her instead of Alema Rar."
"Or in addition to, since the two of them were clearly cooperating against the Skywalkers at Roqoo Depot," Zekk said, heading to join them. "So maybe the three of us aren't a match for Lumiya. She fought the Grand Master to a standstill. She's Master level. Officially, we're two Jedi Knights and one Force-blind space jockey."
Jaina frowned up at him. "Zekk, that was uncalled for."
"I'm just explaining, correctly and logically, that Fel is not an asset when it comes to matters of the Force."
"Zekk, stop it!"
"And this sort of analysis is something that Fel knows quite a lot about," Zekk said anyway. He turned to address Jag. "Didn't you once tell Jaina I wasn't a good enough pilot to join her squadron? Wasn't that cool, levelheaded analysis?"
Oh, seriously? That was ages ago, when she'd first gotten Twin Suns during the Yuuzhan Vong war. Jag had talked her out of adding Zekk to the roster, and she'd agreed. Maybe she shouldn't have, but again, that had been over a decade ago.
Jag looked nonplussed, but it took him a while to reply. "No, that wasn't analysis. That was me being jealous, and knowing I already had a boyfriend to compete against, I was trying to keep you out of the way. Funnily enough, I seem to find myself in the same position now." And since Zekk was clearly surprised at the honesty, Jag continued, "And that's something you know all about. Jealousy. Otherwise you wouldn't hover like a brooding hawk-bat whenever I walk up to ask Jaina the time."
Jaina felt herself redden. That chair-breaking answer suddenly made a lot more sense to her. "Jag..."
"You always know the time," Zekk shot back. "You're just making excuses to talk to her."
NO. NO, NO, NO. They were not supposed to be doing this. Competition over things that happened years ago, fine. It was stupid and immature, but she could deal with it. They were not supposed to be fighting over her. They were both supposed to be over her. She preferred it that way. "Boys, you're making me angry..."
She was saved by the beeping of Jag's datapad, which he pulled from his pocket and opened. "High-priority flash traffic," he said, and began reading off the information presented to him, and just like that the argument was over and forgotten. They had a vampire to catch up and a crazy slutty Dark Jedi to find.
And Jaina almost wanted to thank that crazy slutty Dark Jedi for her timing.
