Somewhere in the preserve, Friday after the luau

Jaina genuinely liked the cabins, but it did lead to certain little problems, like not getting to spend any real time alone with her boyfriend on a normal basis. This hadn't exactly been an issue that had even crossed her mind last summer, which meant that this summer she'd have to get a little creative.

After the luau, they made it a point to head off on their own, heading to the preserve to find some sort of alone time. "You know," Jaina said, "this would probably be easier with a little more light."

John hadn't thought that far ahead, no. "It's too bad neither of us have magic like that Barry Plodder kid."

Jaina had heard the references, but didn't know any details. "What kind of magic is that?"

"Like, actual hocus pocus making fire type of magic," John tried.

"Yeah, sorry, that's a little out of my skill set," she said. "I have the flashlight on my multitool but I think that's a little underpowered."

"Well, you can like, sense your way in the dark, no?" He possibly overestimated her Jedi skills.

She shrugged a little. "Better than most people, after Kalarba, but I'm still completely capable of tripping and embarrassing myself."

He felt a slight pang at the memory of her being blind. "Then let's hope we find a nice clearing soon."

Not to mention it would be nice to be kissing her and not just wandering around the woods with her.

"I know they exist," she said, wishing her eyes to adjust better so that she could see. "I know we've found a couple before while running."

"I think I'd settle for some a tree with less foliage surrounding it," John replied, moving slowly to avoid tripping.

"Obviously setting high standards," she teased, reaching out to make sure she wasn't bumping into anything. It was strangely automatic to do that, used to a couple months of the gesture.

"Hey, there's a goal here that isn't just wandering, am I right?" Noting a slight separation of trees, John stopped. "What about here?"

Looking in that direction, she nodded. "I think we should be okay with there," she said, stepping to the almost-clearing.

John walked over to lean against a tree. "Are you sure it wouldn't have been easier to just kick people out of a cabin?"

"Much harder to keep them out," she said, coming closer.

"They'd have to enter at their own risk," he replied, reaching out a hand.

"Because they'd be scarred or because I'd have to kill them?" she asked, taking his hand and leaning against him.

He chuckled lightly, twining their fingers. "It's their own fault either way."

Smiling, she said, "Of course, I don't do too well with being interrupted."

"Why's that?" he asked, wondering if she had a general or specific reason.

"You have to ask?" she said, raising her eyebrows.

"No, just verifying an assumption," he said, distracted by her proximity.

"What can I say," she said, "you're a good focus."

"Guess it's good I like your attentions," he replied.

"If you didn't, I think we'd have a bit of a problem," she said, settling her free hand lightly on his hip.

"No problems allowed," John decided, placing his free hand at the small of her back.
