The garage, Monday evening

Jaina wasn't the most romantic girl in the universe by a long shot, but she was actually trying today. After all, today was John's eighteenth birthday (and she could stop committing felonies in all the states), and she'd figured that the best way to celebrate was to do something nice.

So she had the blanket laid out, and the Chinese food and candles, the big details she could remember from that one date. Which, by the way, she could remember that, but had to keep reminding herself of when their anniversary was. That hardly seemed right.

Once she had everything set up, there was nothing else to do but wait for her date to show.


[For the birthday boy, and up early for SP. And yes, it's a public place, but you're gonna pick now to come down here finally? Really?]

"No changing your mind?" He reached up to stroke his fingertips along her cheek.

"Somehow I don't think that's going to happen," she said honestly, trailing her fingers lightly along his neck.

"Because you love me." He enjoyed stating facts like that sometimes.

She smiled, agreeing, "Entirely."

"It's kinda obvious," he smiled.

"And you can never say you don't know," she said, kissing him lightly.

"I've known a long time," he said, kissing her again.

"How long?" she asked teasingly between kisses.

"Sometime last year," he replied, having no problem talking between kisses.

"I'd hope so, since that's about when I said it," she pointed out, though the talking came secondary.

"Almost a year ago," he agreed, kissing her again. "On a Monday in January." No, he didn't know their anniversary, but he remembered serious screw-ups.

He got a longer kiss for that. "I'm impressed." She really kind of was.

He liked being rewarded. "That I remember or that I didn't manage to screw it up that badly?"

"Both," she said, smiling against his lips.

"I love you, too, you know," he murmured in response.

A year later, she still got flutters in her stomach hearing that. "I know," she murmured back, kissing him more firmly.

John had never particularly cared about his birthday, but there was something to be said for a day when he got to spend the evening being a dork with his girlfriend and getting to kiss her as much as he wanted. "You'd better."

She was feeling pretty good about all this and it wasn't even her birthday. "And you know how much I love you, right?" She felt the need to ask in return.

"Ooh, upgrading to quantity," he teased, wondering if this was going to turn into a competition, but kissing her because he didn't care.

"You didn't answer," she pointed out, pulling herself a bit closer.

"Not a fair question," he replied, sliding one hand around her waist.

"Is too," she countered, wrapping her other arm around him.

"So tell me." He tilted his head to kiss her jaw.

She took some extra time in kissing him, brow furrowing in semi-thought as she said, "I don't think there are even words." And whatever words she could find were likely to be sappier than she thought she was capable of.

"Told you," he grinned before rewarding her lack of response with another kiss. "Not a fair question."
