Room 527, Tuesday morning

Jaina woke to a few thoughts in her head even in those first few seconds when you rightfully shouldn't be able to think of anything:

1. She had to get up and make her usual checkup calls back home and see what she'd been sent overnight.
2. She had class to go to.
3. She had enough time that she could spend a little while longer snuggled up to her boyfriend, all warm and comfortable.

Focusing on the third option for now, she slung her arm over him, pulling herself closer just because she could.

"Yeah, I know, but it's okay because he missed his chance." And now there was rubbing of the temples...

"When did that jackass have a chance?" John asked incredulously.

"He's not a jackass," Jaina said. "And I was fourteen, I barely knew what hormones were yet. Now I definitely do."

"Good, because if it was this summer I'd fly out there and shoot him. Screw his Force abilities." See, she didn't need to hear these thoughts.

No, she probably didn't. "You have nothing to worry about from Zekk, and I don't like when you get possessive, because it's for no reason."

"No reason? Yeah, I don't understand that at all." Where were his happy white lies?

"I'm not the type of girl to act on something like that," she said, frowning.

"I didn't say you were gonna cheat on me," John pointed out. "It doesn't really have anything to do with you. It's about other people having no respect for the fact that you and I are together and even considering trying something."

"No one's tried anything," Jaina said. "Jag's the only one who came close and he didn't really do anything and he backed off when I said to." She had told him about that, right? She was pretty sure she had. "I liked the sex talk better."

"When the hell did that happen? I so knew that guy was after you!" No, she'd left that out.

"Borleias. He wanted to know why I saved him like I did. It was not for any reasons like he was thinking," she said, again with the frown. "All he did was ask."

"Wait, was I there for that?" John was working hard on not thinking.

"I cried at you afterwards." She didn't want to admit that, no.

"That bastard," John muttered. "I remember that. I don't think I can ever forget seeing you cry."

"I don't blame him. I think I'm at fault by leading him on without meaning to." That part was met with wincing. "And I really wish you would forget seeing me cry."

"You were leading him on?" Did he have to sound so pathetic when he said that?

"I didn't mean to!" she protested. "I picked fights with him."

...Yeah, that really was it. This was what happened when you grew up with her parents. That could easily be sen as flirting, or actually arguing.

"You don't pick fights with me..."

"Yes, I have. Ours just tend to go in other directions," Jaina said. "Besides, you wouldn't want to see me doing that when I was as messed up as I was on Hapes." She was going to have to kill herself later. She just was.

"Let me get this straight," John said. "Back when you were avoiding calling me to break up with me, you were flirting with other guys in such a way that even months later when I was on the god damned base they thought you were interested?" The hurt in his chest was feeling severe.

"I wasn't trying to flirt with him!" Jaina insisted, not liking how this was going. "I was destructive, and it was fun to knock him down because he was always so calm about everything, and I needed to knock down everything then. He wasn't in on what my motivations really were."

"See, it's finding out stuff like this way after the fact that hurts," John told her, shaking his head. "How would you like it if I told you some girl was all over me while you were gone and I was debating never seeing you again?"

"I'd beat you both," she replied. "But that's not what happened. What I was doing to him is not something you'd want done to you."

"Whatever, Jaina," he sighed, and normally he would leave it at that, but the truth was pouring forth. "Shit from the summer isn't worth it. Why did you have to say anything?"

"You started bringing up other guys. It was the worst summer I'm likely to ever have, whether I live to nineteen or nine hundred, and it has nothing to do with anyone who may have had a crush on me." She would have stopped there, but she kind of couldn't right now. "And I can't take that you're turning it into this."
