Room 313, Wednesday afternoon

All right, fine, Jaina may have been sulking a bit. She hadn't had time to find something to distract her between leaving John and Colorado and getting back to the dorms, which meant too much time thinking. There'd been plenty of goodbyes lately, but having the person who'd pretty much gotten you through the last year, what, 3000 miles away? It was different.

Worse still was that this was the first time in a long time she hadn't just gone up to John's room after a trip, so she almost bypassed the third floor entirely, which was just going to make her feel like an idiot for a while. And when she got to her room and started to unpack, she set up her comlink to play her messages so she could multitask.

And she found a few she wasn't really expecting.

Frowning, she decided unpacking could wait a bit, and called him back. She hadn't even heard her comlink go off.

"You're already needing to pass the time?" It might take her a bit to actually realize he'd been there for a week.

"Ugh," John made a face. "I really hate unpacking. And my place is up against a train or something so there's a lot of noise."

"I'm pretty sure first places are built like that on purpose," she told him. At east that's what her dad would say.

"You and my roommate would agree then," John complained. "He claims he doesn't even hear it anymore." There was something to be said for being the first to move in.

"Roommate, huh? Does this mean you won't be sending anyone gift baskets?"

John paused, wondering what she was talking about until it hit him and he started laughing. "Nope, no baskets. I might give him twenty bucks to clear out when you come into town."

"I bet he'll clear out all on his own and you can save yourself twenty bucks." Really, this was them.

"There's no telling yet. These walls are pretty thin." And who knew about sketchy roommates.

"By the time I get there, you'll probably know for sure," Jaina said. "That's something to pass the time: find out."

She almost couldn't believe they were talking normally after how this had started.

"Right, all I've got is time." He was going to have to sign up for extra classes or something.

"That means I really am going to be getting a lot of messages, doesn't it?" She completely didn't mind.

"It does," he said. "I wonder how many messages your in-box can hold..."

"Try some E-mails, too. I promise I'll check it for once. I want to see how the message comes through time and datewise." Geek.

"Only if you promise to send me videos of any gremlin bites or weird invasions that happen," he countered.

"I'll do what I can," she promised. "A lot might have to wait for Lois to get back." Lois = walking recording device, apparently.

"Should I send you a camera phone?" John wondered.

"You really want that footage," Jaina laughed.

"Hey, if I can't be there, that's the next best thing." He was really going to miss Fandom when the first funny thing happened.

"I'll send what I can," she told him, getting up to start unpacking again. It was easier now that there weren't arguments or leg-shakiness. She noticed the extra bag only now. "Did you forget some stuff?" she wondered.

She really failed to pay attention to him sometimes and it generally worked out in his favor since now he got to witness the discovery. "Nope. That's all yours."

She'd been distracted. That was her excuse.

Jaina picked up the bag, setting it on the bed next to her own. "Did I actually forget stuff?" she asked as she opened it.

"Yep. In that I packed it for you," he nodded, kicking his feet up and waiting for her reaction.

She laughed before she said anything. "Does this mean I don't have to use you for your bedding anymore?" she asked, pulling it out of the bag.

He was immediately pleased with himself. "It means you don't have to suffer for comfort while I'm gone."

"Well, you are the best pillow," she pointed out.
