Room 313, Monday afternoon

After classes, Jaina came back upstairs, closing her closet door against a pair of talking boots- talk about unethical treatment some more now- and decided she just had to go ahead and make the call home. It might be the weirdest question ever, but she'd volunteered to have it and really, this was something she might as well talk about anyway. Back to real life and all.

Besides, the look on her uncle's face when she explained that she needed to know a wedding ceremony- not for her- but so that he could officiate the marriage of his father to his 19-year-old girlfriend was pretty classic.

"I can't help that," he shrugged. "I think it'd be cool. I'd even help."

"This in no way spounds like a good idea," Jaina said. "And I'd have to build the launcher first."

"It's not a good idea," John replied. "It's a great idea."

Jaina shook her head. "Oh, sweetie. I worry about you some days."

"What's there to worry about. You'd be there to protect me."

"So," she said slowly, "you're using me as gremlin protection now?"

"I assume if you're knocking them at walls and trapping them, they won't be trying to bite me," he pointed out.

"So when you say you'll help, if I'm doing the knocking and the trapping, then that leaves you doing... what, exactly?"

"I'll be bait."

"You may be the first person I've ever heard volunteer for that," she said thoughtfully.

John smiled. "I have faith in you and your abilities. Besides, worse comes to worse you knock me unconscious if it bites me."

Jaina didn't say anything, as she was too busy trying not to say Ha!

"You would knock me unconscious and save me from the embarrassment of whatever it wanted me to do, right?" John asked, worried.

"Of course," she said, but there was a pause before it.

"Did you just lie to me?"

Another pause. "I'd have to at least see what it was you thought you were first," she admitted.

John stared. "Then I can only hope it makes me do something you find horrifically embarrassing."

"Okay, now turn that around; if I got bit, what would you do?" she countered.

"Pray it made you sing," he grinned.

"You're still stuck on that, huh?"

"It's been months," he pointed out. "And I've never heard you."

"That just means you're lucky," she assured him.

"You heard my scary singing," he reminded her. "It's only fair."

"I like you too much, I couldn't possibly do that to you."
