Room 313, Monday afternoon

After classes, Jaina came back upstairs, closing her closet door against a pair of talking boots- talk about unethical treatment some more now- and decided she just had to go ahead and make the call home. It might be the weirdest question ever, but she'd volunteered to have it and really, this was something she might as well talk about anyway. Back to real life and all.

Besides, the look on her uncle's face when she explained that she needed to know a wedding ceremony- not for her- but so that he could officiate the marriage of his father to his 19-year-old girlfriend was pretty classic.

As if John could stay away. After his own trauma-inducing encounter with horse!Karal in government, he was looking for some normalcy.

He drummed his fingers against the door and waited for a response.

"Hi!" Jaina called, fully aware of who it was, getting up to put her equipment back on her desk.

Deciding that was an invite, he turned the knob and pushed the door open. "Hey, whatcha up to?"

"Scarring my uncle," she said easily. "Yourself?"

"Ooh, yours might be better than mine," he replied. "I come from having class with a horse."

"You sure you don't want to rethink that statement?" Jaina frowned. "A horse?"

"I happen to like it when you scar people," he teased. "Yeah, a Karal horse. And before you ask, I have no idea how or why."

"How is he a horse?" Jaina asked, despite what he'd just said. "I saw him last night and he was- Oh, Fandom."

"You got it on the first try," John replied. "So which version are you scarring and why?"

"So my grandfather's wedding not only got moved up to two months from now, but this version of Luke is officiating the ceremony. Which means I got to call my version of Luke to see what they use and explain why."

John paused to process. "Okay, that actually sounds like you're scarring yourself."

"Is it bad that I don't feel scarred?" Yes, it probably was.

"Possibly, but I think it says more about your abilities to cope," he replied.

"And about how much I've had to use them," she said with false cheeriness. "Imagine my skills of repression in another year."

"Wow, that's a scary thought," he said, frowning a little. "I think you could surpass me in repression."

Yes. Yes she could.

"It only works if the things I'm trying to repress would let me," she said. "I was sort of hoping I'd be graduated before I had to deal with having a 19-year-old alternate reality stepgrandmother."

"So you should work on graduating this year," he teased. "Since it seems to be happening now. But why repress? Let's embrace it."

She stared at him.

"19-year-old alternate reality stepgrandmother," she repeated.

"Maybe you two could share clothes," he offered. "She's probably the hippest grandmother ever."

"If time keeps going by back home as fast as it has been, I'm going to be older than her in like a year and a half," Jaina pointed out.

"And a junior," he added, because that made it better.

"You're not helping," she told him.

"I'm sorry," he said, trying not to laugh. "You win in terms of 19-year-old alternate reality step grandmothers. Just think of it as one of those experiences you never would've had without Fandom."

"You mean another one?" she said with a raised eyebrow.

"Exactly. I figure those are the experiences we're here for," John replied.
