Room 313, Sunday night

Jaina tried to keep her mess restricted to the garage, mostly for Inara's sake rather than her own. Besides, rediscovering lost spare parts in bare feet was never fun, which was why she was collecting all the pieces for the toaster experiment into containers to bring back down there.

And then occasionally trying to throw them into said containers from a distance away out of boredom.

John knocked on the door, never sure when there might be a Gavin and Inara behind it. Mexico had possibly scarred him.

She didn't even look up, making her next shot easily. It wasn't like she didn't know who it was. "Come in!"

Entering the room, he took a look at what she was up to, "No more laser toaster?"

"I fixed the toaster. I've decided it can do without weaponry," she said. Because she wasn't being an emo bitch about things now. "For now."

Oh, the disappointment. "That's too bad. I was hoping to have something that could both make a tasty breakfast and save me from the gremlins."

"I'm not saying it'll never happen," she said, scooping the rest of the pieces up to put away.

"What is happening now?" he asked. "Other than the cleaning up."

"Nothing," she said. "It's been quiet, I haven't really been working on anything... How about you?"

"The usual Sunday stuff," he shrugged. "Followed by the usual Sunday boredom. There must be something about having class tomorrow."

"You'd think we'd appreciate the boredom more, knowing we won't have it tomorrow," she mused, and got up to take a seat on the bed.

"Or maybe the anticipation of activity is just too much," he offered, moving to join her on the bed.

"Somehow I doubt that's it," she said with a little smile.

"Let me know if you think of something better," he said.

Evey was bored, and felt that enough time had passed since That Incident With the Dancing, so she found herself wandering across the hall to knock lightly on Jaina and Inara's door.

Jaina hadn't had nearly enough contact with Evey to be able to get a sense for when she was nearby, so she got to be curious for once when she called "Come in!" since between her and the door were several machine parts.

Evey poked her head in. "'lo." She paused, taking in the room. "Having fun?"

"If cleaning up is fun, then yes," Jaina said easily. "Come on in, Evey."

She smiled, letting herself in. "What do those pieces go to?" she asked curiously, leaning against the door.

"Parts of them go to a toaster I've been gutting and refurbishing to make it work again," she explained. "The other parts were going to be a laser for it. Not as scary as it sounds, I swear."

Evey blinked, and replied, "Well, you know, some people just like their toast really dark."

"See, that was a practical application I hadn't thought of," she said. "It was supposed to be for melting butter. Considering the response the laser thing's gotten, it's probably a good idea I scrapped that part."

"You can make lasers, though? Is it hard?" Evey thought that might be a little more useful and precise than her usual method of doing things.

"Depends on what sort of laser you're making and what sort of parts you have on hand and what the power source is," she said. "Something this small, it's not too hard. But then again, I've been doing this sort of thing forever, so maybe it's experience."

Evey smiled. "I wish I had that kind of mechanical knowledge. My area of expertise is a little more organic, but your skill set looks incredibly useful. Especially if you're picky about your toast."

"It helps. My work's usually on ships now," she shrugged. "What's your area?"
