Room 313, Saturday afternoon

Jaina didn't tend to sleep in late, but she did today. She started out trying to convince herself that she wasn't sick, then decided that was stupid and obviously she'd just come down with whatever was going around and it wasn't a big deal. She'd just go on like normal.

Which meant she was curled up on her bed trying to go over the latest reports she'd sent for the fourth time, because the fuzzy-headedness meant she comprehended nothing from the first three times.

"Because you're weird."

"Yes, but why am I weird?" she asked.

"Because if it was me feeling a little sick, I'd be milking it for all I could get," he said.

"Guys are different like that," Jaina pointed out.

"How so?"

"You try to milk it for all you can get," she said. "I think it's a biological predisposition."

"And girls never would?" he wondered.

"I'm sure some would. But not the ones I know."

John considered this, but it didn't fit the girls he'd known. "I think I'm gonna consider it one of those things that make you you."

"I hardly believe that," Jaina said. "You should have seen my mother after Duro. We had to sedate her so she wouldn't keep fighting and bleed to death. A little cold is nothing."

"Maybe it has something to do with your lifestyle," he suggested. "It's not like any of you ever have real downtime."

"We do," she protested. "Just not lately. ...For two years."

"Two years is sort of a long time," he said gently.

"Less for me than anyone else," Jaina said, and remembering what Jolee said, added,"It has to end eventually." Just no guarantee she'd see that end.

"It will," he nodded, even if he figured that would just make room for something else to crop up.

"We got serious there," she noticed.

"Sorry," he didn't mean to be serious.

"No, my fault," she said, finally setting her datapad down next to her and curling up next to him a little more.

He smiled a little, "Does being sick make you serious now?"

"No, me being me makes me serious now," she returned, resting her head on his shoulder. This was really comfortable.

He didn't mind at all. "And is serious you comfortable?"

"Entirely. You're a great pillow," she complimented.

"It's all the extra padding."

Jaina rolled her eyes. "You do not have extra padding, just a comfortable shoulder, shut up."
