Room 527, Tuesday morning

Jaina woke to a few thoughts in her head even in those first few seconds when you rightfully shouldn't be able to think of anything:

1. She had to get up and make her usual checkup calls back home and see what she'd been sent overnight.
2. She had class to go to.
3. She had enough time that she could spend a little while longer snuggled up to her boyfriend, all warm and comfortable.

Focusing on the third option for now, she slung her arm over him, pulling herself closer just because she could.

"You're killing me," Jaina sighed, shaking her head as she sat up. This part she didn't actually have a problem saying, as obviously he needed to hear it. "You're perfect for me. You just don't know it yet."

"When will I know it? In four months when I leave?" John asked, horrified at himself.

"I don't know," she said automatically, but wow was that a way to depress a girl. "That's not enough time."

"I don't want to go," he admitted. "But if you don't ask me to stay, I have to." Oh honesty, John would like you to die in a fire.

"It's not fair to you to ask you to," she replied, which that part didn't seem fair to her since she'd never even considered that before.

"Why not? I can tell you right now I'd say yes, problem solved," he blurted.

"Because you don't know your potential yet," Jaina said, more than a little horrified at this conversation. "As much as I want to ask you to stay, or just stay with me."

"I don't care about my potential," John argued. "I can do more good with you than I ever could in a utility corporation or wasting four years at college."

"You should care. You're amazing and you're just going to get more amazing," she said. "And what happens if I'm not around?"

The telling thing was that she'd moved on to if in statements like that.

"What do you mean, if?" He'd caught it and he didn't like it.

"I put myself in a position to get shot at on a regular basis," Jaina pointed out. It wasn't really a secret, but given Jacen's reaction she didn't think it was something to throw out there all the time. "I didn't think I was going to live to see twenty."

John blinked at her, "And how is that a fair reason to keep me away? So what, we should break up because someday you might not be around?"

"No," she said quickly. "But I don't want to be harder for you if and when I die suddenly." Maybe there was duct tape around here.

He sighed, "Jaina, I'm going to be a mess if something happens to you now, six months from now, or twenty years from now. No matter if we're together or apart. There's nothing you can do to make it easier for me, so don't try, please."

If she were the crying type, that probably would have done it. She was grateful for that. "I don't want you to go," she said quietly.

"Come here," he said quietly, leaning closer and trying to get an arm around her.

She felt about seven years old, and moved in closer to him. "I've thought about going with you," she said, even if she internally frowned at herself for saying it.

"You'd be bored out of your mind," he pointed out, wrapping his arms around her. "Just like I would be if I was there without you."

"What do you want to do?" It may have been cheating, but he'd talked around that question every time she'd asked.

He was just glad he could hide his face from her while answering quietly. "Be good enough to stay with you."

"You are," she said, taking one of his hands. "So... stay. We'll figure something out."

She hadn't really wanted to ask that, for all the reason she'd said, and a lot of others she hadn't gotten to. But when it came down to it, she wanted to ask that.

He nodded, knowing she couldn't just be saying that if he wasn't capable of just saying things. "I never intended to go anywhere if I could help it."

"I thought you'd seemed pretty set on it," Jaina said, almost feeling nervous now that all this was out there.

"Last time I was sure of that was before I got to visit your world and be of help to something real," John told her.

"And now it doesn't feel right when you're not there," she said. "Should I even be uncomfortable talking at this point?"
