Room 527, Tuesday morning

Jaina woke to a few thoughts in her head even in those first few seconds when you rightfully shouldn't be able to think of anything:

1. She had to get up and make her usual checkup calls back home and see what she'd been sent overnight.
2. She had class to go to.
3. She had enough time that she could spend a little while longer snuggled up to her boyfriend, all warm and comfortable.

Focusing on the third option for now, she slung her arm over him, pulling herself closer just because she could.

"What are you curious about? Why did I ask?" He was just going to be over here, staring at his feet.

"Why are you so scared to talk to me?"

"Because I have no control over what I say, and man, you must not be paying attention because I usually choose my words very carefully," John admitted.

"I get that, I just don't know what's so bad that you can't say it," she said. And let's face it, she'd already said things she wished she hadn't.

"What am I supposed to be saying here? It's really confusing when you're vague."

"You'd really rather I ask direct questions?" Jaina asked with raised eyebrows.

"No," his eyes widened. "You asked if you should be worried about this truthiness thing. I said yes because I am worried. Now I'm wishing I'd said no."

"I was asking if I should be worried at anything you might tell me. Is it wrong we can still have misunderstandings when we're like this?"

"No, because I'm an idiot," he told her frankly. "And Jaina, I think you know everything that might worry you about me and I'm kind of amazed you haven't fled at some of it."

"You're not an idiot," Jaina told him. "And I deal with politicians, and obsessive admirals, and you would have to really screw up for me to flee."

"I'm not good enough to be with you, and man how pathetic does that sound? You know, I like it better when I don't say my every thought," John rambled, hoping that would fix things.

If it weren't for truth day, she probably would have just been left staring at him in disbelief. Instead, he got, "What the hell would make you think that?"

"Maybe because you're an amazing pilot and tactician, a natural leader, a gifted Jedi, and you're the hottest girl I've ever seen," he told her easily. "And I'm a screw-up from Earth who will one day amount to nothing. And I know, you disagree, but you asked."

"You're killing me," Jaina sighed, shaking her head as she sat up. This part she didn't actually have a problem saying, as obviously he needed to hear it. "You're perfect for me. You just don't know it yet."

"When will I know it? In four months when I leave?" John asked, horrified at himself.

"I don't know," she said automatically, but wow was that a way to depress a girl. "That's not enough time."

"I don't want to go," he admitted. "But if you don't ask me to stay, I have to." Oh honesty, John would like you to die in a fire.

"It's not fair to you to ask you to," she replied, which that part didn't seem fair to her since she'd never even considered that before.

"Why not? I can tell you right now I'd say yes, problem solved," he blurted.

"Because you don't know your potential yet," Jaina said, more than a little horrified at this conversation. "As much as I want to ask you to stay, or just stay with me."

"I don't care about my potential," John argued. "I can do more good with you than I ever could in a utility corporation or wasting four years at college."

"You should care. You're amazing and you're just going to get more amazing," she said. "And what happens if I'm not around?"

The telling thing was that she'd moved on to if in statements like that.

"What do you mean, if?" He'd caught it and he didn't like it.

"I put myself in a position to get shot at on a regular basis," Jaina pointed out. It wasn't really a secret, but given Jacen's reaction she didn't think it was something to throw out there all the time. "I didn't think I was going to live to see twenty."

John blinked at her, "And how is that a fair reason to keep me away? So what, we should break up because someday you might not be around?"
