( Jaina hadn't known anything was wrong until a few days later when Luke contacted her wanting to know where Mara was. When he decided to follow her last-known trail towards Hapes, he asked her to go along, feeling that something was wrong. )

[Warning for offscreen character death and wah. NFB, NFI, OOC okay, especially hugs cuz hitting post was really hard. Most of the dialogue taken from Sacrifice by Karen Traviss, but parts were added and I think I may have ripped a lot of this apart in the name of sense-making.]

( It was strange being back at GA Starfighter Command, seeing as how the last time Jaina had been here, it'd been in uniform. Now she was just a civilian again, and it stung worse than she wanted to admit. )

( After rendezvousing with Luke and Mara on the Jade Shadow, filling them in on why Ben needed to be grounded forever and giving their injured party more proper temporary medical attention, Tenel Ka agreed to have her surgeons work on Zekk. As they prepped his stretcher for transport, Jaina found herself alone with Mara for the first time in a while. )

[NFB, NFI, OOC okay. Most dialogue and a bit or two taken from Tempest by Troy Denning, though I had to add/adjust some things. I promise Ben gets better.]

( While it was one of the details she'd learned in Fandom that sort of slipped her mind over time given everything else, Jaina had known that she'd lose her fifteen-year-old military career thanks to Jacen. She just hadn't realized it'd be only a month into rejoining active service. )

( Jaina had jumped at the chance to fly against Luke in a live fire exercise at the base's training section. Part of it was that she felt rusty and wanted serious competition to make sure she was going to survive a battle, but mostly, she wanted time with Luke. )

( The bad thing about knowing parts of the future, Jaina had decided, was not knowing all of it. For instance, she knew that there was a war surrounding the Jacen stuff, but she didn't know with who or why or when it happened. After the parties involved in the negotiations with Corellia were attacked in the middle of the night, though, she had to accept that this was most likely it. )

( The ride from Han and Leia's new apartment to the Jedi Temple was spent mostly in silence, right up till Zekk had to open his mouth. )

Between the messages she'd gotten and what she'd seen on the board, Jaina would call herself anything but happy, but she didn't feel as if her brain was just stopped today. With yesterday's Portalocity email, she had to refocus, and there were some things she needed to do.

The first thing she did was call her Luke, to make sure he knew exactly what was going on. She didn't tell him about any of the disappeared that he might know. That wasn't going to do anyone any good. The second thing she did was record a message for Jacen.

She ended the transmission and sent it, telling herself that as soon as this was over and everything was fixed she'd be able to threaten someone but good in order to get back home. It made her feel mildly better.

( Jacen arrived at the Taat nest about a month after the others had first gotten there. For as many comments as Jaina gave him about being more than a little tardy in answering a call for help, she was elated to see her twin for the first time since the end of the Vong war. It was just too bad it wasn't under better circumstances. )

( Even thought it had come up more than once in the past as a possibility, Jaina had never really imagined herself as a teacher. It just wasn't her style, and being Sword of the Jedi didn't really lend itself to kid-friendly activities. However, when the opportunity came to take Ben on, she'd probably surprised a few people by actually saying yes. )

( While Jaina was sure the sheer ferocity with which she trained sometimes raised eyebrows, she would have loved to point out that occasionally she had to do things like try to make her way through an unfamiliar Vongformed planet in what was brewing up to be a major storm as fast as possible while keeping up with commandos and the greatest Jedi ever, and that in itself she thought should give her reason to defend her training to her death. )

( Once the battle plan was decided, things seemed to move faster than they actually did. Almost as soon as Jaina was reunited with her parents, they were separated again as Han and Leia ran off into yet another dangerous mission on Caluula. As far as Jaina was concerned, that sort of thing was fine for her to do, but the rest of her family just needed to slow the hell down already. )

( Some of Jaina's exhaustion was able to be beaten away temporarily with the Force, but she'd take temporary. While she sent John and the rest of Twin Suns away from herself and the rest of the Jedi being hunted, she and Lowie and Tesar waited in a cold, dark, silent shaft, waiting to be found. )
