If she was being really fair about it, Jaina knew that she'd had it surprisingly easy, considering everything she was juggling, and she'd taken it all on in a relatively short amount of time. It also had to be said that she had a lot of help and didn't do any of it alone.

Except when it came to her headstrong teenage padawan who didn't really have a sense of his own mortality yet. Since leaving Coruscant they'd been on the trail of at least some of the One Sith, had a couple skirmishes before they vanished, and there had been a few fights about how to handle oneself in a situation like this when your Master was terrifying in a fight and you were just still learning. At the moment he was probably sulking in the cabin he'd claimed on the ship they'd borrowed, and Jaina was in the pilot's seat, wondering if it'd be wrong to make the Imperial-based Darkmeld Jedi go drinking with her just to commiserate once she got home.

At least for now, she just sent a text. Sometimes I want to apologize for my teen years.

Which was not actually an apology.

Jag and Jaina had seen each other through some pretty terrible injuries. The boys had fallen off or run into things and gotten hurt before. Those specific examples hadn't quite prepared her for her padawan ending up in a bacta tank.

Bhixen had figured he had stumbled on a lead on a Sith threat, and according to him he'd tried to call Jaina, but she'd been in Fandom. Tahiri had been busy with the school so he didn't want to bug her. Kyp was on Coruscant. He hadn't even thought of telling Lowie. She knew these were all excuses for him getting it in his head that he could handle it himself and go off and be a hero, and he hadn't counted on it backfiring on him.

The thing was, Jaina would have done the exact same thing at his age.

He'd actually said at one point that she would have done it, and she got to point out that she had twenty years on him, and she'd had to go through a lot of horrific stuff to get this level of good. She wasn't sure that sunk in. She'd gotten him out of it and gotten him back to the temple, and he'd be fine when he got out. She'd taken what he'd found to the Council and clued Jag in and kept herself busy because it was better than feeling terrible. (She still felt terrible.)

They'd be taking him out of the tank today, so Jaina was sitting and waiting outside for quite a while, running through lectures to give him in her head and telling herself not to say the first thing that came to mind. This was so much easier when she was the one being dumb.

...maybe she should apologize to her parents. And Uncle Luke.

Jaina hadn't had any messages over the weekend after Jag found out she was small, and it wasn't until Jaina was through all the portals home and on a government-run private transport back to the palace when she saw the number of messages she had from the Tahiri here. At first she worried that something had happened to Jag or the boys, but when she listened, it was about Bhixen.

Honestly, it was a wonder it had taken this long before getting any worried calls about her apprentice.

She listened to the messages, made a quick call back to her, and then rolled down the window to talk to the driver. "Change of plans. Take me straight to the hangar."

Jaina had been through this before, she knew (sort of) what to expect, and she knew the instant Anakin got here. It was both the best and the most anxiety-inducing feeling, because there was so much more everything now, starting with the two fifteen-month olds who were already getting overtired.

So she'd stayed at the hotel, because at least if they threw fits or anything they were contained, and she wouldn't have to worry about it stopping a needed conversation in public. And she opened herself up in the Force, knowing he'd know how to find her, and tried not to be too nervous.

It was fine.

If Jaina had had her way, Dax and Daniel would have had something simple for their first birthday. Unfortunately, everything these days had to be a kriffing event run through committee, and there had been talk of how people were going to want to see holos of the boys, and how it really would help shore up support for them, all things considering. Jaina had argued probably more than she needed to, but the important thing was, she got her way on this one.

It was still bigger than she wanted, and there were too many people "from work," but she also hadn't had to put up any of the decorations and there were people actually hired to take them down. And really, it was nowhere near the levels that Anakin and Deadpool had competed to back in the day. The family was still there, and she was spending most of her time watching the boys to make sure that if they were going to have the time of their lives attempting to run around until they fell over (it was not going well!), that they didn't fall over into anything that would require a doctor.

Still, next year she was insisting on simple.

Jaina had a birthday coming up, and while she'd never done much for them she'd sort of tried to ignore them since Jacen died. As it turned out, the twins' birthdays were only a few days later, so she could put the focus on that instead.

Honestly, since these next couple months tended to be a painful slog of reminders of things like both brothers' deaths, these kids helped.

So today there was a text going out.

The boys are having their first birthday party out here on Saturday the 14th. If you can make it, great, and we're in charge of who sees what so no one has to shave their head.

That should be stated.

Over the course of their relationship, Jag had gotten used to not hearing from Jaina for a few days. He'd call, leave messages, and try not to worry since she always called back when she could. But, he probably hadn't been expecting to call and see a sixteen-year-old Jaina in her hotel room who recognized him as "that guy from the simulator who keeps killing me."

Meanwhile, Jaina was trying to write this off as just another Fandom thing- she hadn't been here too long, maybe this happened- and not think too much about the fact that this super serious guy she'd met in person once seemed really amused by this.

This place was dumb sometimes, and once she got off the call, she started getting ready to go to the gym to work off some of this weird feeling.

A major benefit of having someone to train these days meant that Jaina was actually able to go on sanctioned missions again, which she had missed. Maybe her missions were different now, in the name of avoiding a galactic incident, but she still got to go.

And it meant she had to leave the kids at home, which was hard. She’d actually underestimated how hard it would be, so she was going to have to figure out a way to reconcile that. As soon as she got home, she said hi to Jag, and then headed into the boys’ room to look in on them while they were napping. They were both actually starting to wake up, which meant she could get actual time with them when they knew it.

It was then that she noticed the little spot of white at the front of Dax’s hairline, now that he has enough hair to actually have a hairline. She gently touched the spot, like maybe he’d gotten something on him and Jag had somehow missed it, but no, it looked like it was just part of his hair. You know. Like Jag’s. Which he had gotten after a serious head injury resulting in a scar and that streak. It probably shouldn’t have been a surprise when she knew Sia, but it was.

“Hey, honey?” she called. “How is this genetic?”

A whole other lifetime ago, before kids and before the Empire, Luke had been looking to give Jaina an apprentice. At the time it hadn't worked out. But then when the school started here, that potential apprentice had come to study, more or less to show that he'd worked out his issues and was worthy of learning from her.

He definitely hadn't, but Jaina had unofficially taken Bhexen on anyway, and was taking it as a challenge to drill some of the smugness out of him.

Which meant that today she was sitting out training in favor of having Jag spar with him with practice blades. Years ago it'd been the thing to set Jaina straight, because Jag wasn't as good as a Jedi but he was sneakier than one and had armor that would just give him more protection, and as predicted, Bhexen wasn't handling it great. But unless he did something stupid (like Jaina had in this situation), she was going to stay sitting against the wall and watching so she could go over it later with him.

Besides, this was really entertaining.

When Jaina quit the Council almost a year ago, she’d spent a lot of time thinking that her time as a Jedi was over in favor of something she really didn’t want to do, but felt she had to.

Now with students arriving at the school in the Empire in a few days, she was feeling pretty good about things. Also, it was neat to feel a little bit like she was sticking it to Palpatine even now.

They’d needed to find a facility close enough to the palace that Jaina and others could get back and forth easily, and ended up converting space on palace grounds. Time spent on Ossus (thanks, Jacen) meant that she had some idea of how things ran, but Kam had been here to show her and Tahiri the finer points. While she’d have liked more Jedi Knights here to help, the ones who had come were pretty much the ones she’d been closest to anyway. So, even if she wasn’t where she thought she’d be, she was pretty comfortable with where she was.

And, the training space had finally been finished, and she was going to be the one to break it in, and see if anyone else showed up. Jaina went ahead and set up as many remotes as she could find (testing them, obviously), and threw on some blinders to keep things interesting.

The twins were a month old, so things were starting to reach something like normalcy, and that meant work. They'd started easy, heading to Hapes because Jag and Tenel aka had a lot to settle through long meetings of tense not-quite-arguing while Jaina rolled her eyes, and it had the bonus of letting Allana meet her cousins. And then the invitation had been extended to Anakin to meet all his great-grandchildren from this particular universe.

After Anakin arrived, Jaina showed him where his room was and then brought him over to her quarters just in time to watch the boys so Jag could go to a meeting.

"Thanks for the timing," Jaina said just after Jag left. "I was supposed to be in that."

The last time Jag had texted for Jaina, she'd been in the hospital after the worst day of her life.

This time, the setting was similar, but the reasons were very different.

Once everything had settled down and Jag had finally kicked everybody out to let the family spend some time alone, Jaina asked him to get a picture of the twins and send out a message to those who'd want to know. She'd have done it herself, but she'd done enough today, thank you.

So along with a picture of two little, wrinkly baby boys, they'd get the message, Meet Dax and Daniel. They and Jaina are doing well.

"You couldn't have spiced that up a little?" Jaina asked when she saw what he'd sent.

"And how would you have wanted me to do that?" Jag asked.

"Tell them that if they say my babies look like Yoda I'll end them as soon as I can feel my legs again."

"Ah. You should lead with that next time."

On one hand, Jaina hated diplomatic missions and didn't think she was any good at them. On the other hand, at least she was getting out to do things, and she was getting better at the diplomacy thing. And sure, she had to bring a bodyguard still, but he was in back during the flight, while Jaina got to hang out in the cockpit and he slightly bored.

Naturally this meant getting the phone out. She took a picture out the viewport of the hyperspace lines (which took more tries than she would ever admit to to get something not-blurry) and sent it off.

Because really, if nothing else it was pretty.

Jaina had had a while now to actually start picking up on this whole empress thing, so she was glad to have a break for something more normal. Also, she was maybe a little self-conscious (this was rare) because no one from Fandom had actually seen her since everything had happened, and she remembered how different Tenel Ka had seemed after being put in a similar position. As far as Jaina was aware the only thing different about her was that she actually looked pregnant these days, but still. She wondered.

And anyway, she still went out to meet Tahiri when she heard she was here, since she figured no one should have to show up and get greeted by a team of Imperials.

[For Tahiri yay!]
